98 Mauser with matching numbers........
« on: December 01, 2004, 02:44:27 PM »
I recently located a barrelled 98 Mauser action that a friend owns and found out it has all matching numbers.  :o
It also has the Waffenampt(sp?) still on it and while the barrel is pitted the bore is fine.
It's presently in a sporterised mil stock but it hasn't been drilled & tapped and by and large it's in good shape.
I'm buying it and the price you may ask........AUD$120, basically US$95!
I haven't decided what I'll do with it yet although putting back in full wood seems like the best idea.
Now here's a few pics to drool over........

well, some may balk at this, but i think it looks real nice the way it is. if it shoots good and the stock isn't damaged i'd leave it be. it would cost more to restore it, mabe even more than the rifle is worth. for example, i had plans to restore my 1941 Lithgow No.1 MK 3. this included a reblueing and a set of brand new wood from Australia. i changed my mind when my father pointed out it would cost around $650 Cdn. for that i could find an unissued SMLE or a Martini.

BTW, you've been hamging aeround the CGN boards as well haven't you?

Yep
Unfortunately there aren't any Aussie forums that are active in slightest, at least as far as I can find.
Besides, do you think I start telling other guys over here about this?

well if you've spent anytime on CGN you will have noticed that we love our unissued Yugo M-48's from Marstar.i wonder what kind of paperwork and hassle you would have to go through to import one. i know americans can buy guns up here, but many consider it to be to time consuming and problematic. too bad forthem. if they have the patience there's some great deals to be had!

Yeah, I have seen that. We can get those ones too. One mil-surp importer sells them for about AUD$450 but 8mm isn't so popular here so I'm not sure how many he moves. Keep in mind that the biggest animals a lot of Aussie shooters would hunt are pigs. It's not that they aren't big, it's just that usually a .308 is the maximum for what you hunt here, unless you go for deer or buffalo and they usually cost big money to chase.
The most popular newly purchased cal in Australia is probably .223. And past that, probably .243. The ammo is cheap and the round is effective if not showy. It's weird guys like me that go after less known things. I'm beginning to consider picking up mil-surps in a big way now but I'll have to see. I have this thing called a wife who isn't so crazy about guns. Shoulda heard the ruckus when I told her about the Mauser!  :?

kombi - Geez Man, I would shoot that thing as it is.  Lots of those rifles have pitted barrels on the outside - one of the hazards of military use.  But, if the bore is fine she should shoot OK.  Check the fit of the stock to the action if there is room to play, try bedding it but only as far as the end of the chamber into the barrel channel, and free float the rest.

If you decide to scope it I would recommend a standard sporting scope mount, not a scout mount - it is just my preference.  Also, that would require a new bolt handle - cutting and welding those bent bolts doesn't give you a lot of clearance - but a new bolt handle costs very little.  You would also need a low safety to clear the scope - also not a major expense.  Then, you have a shooter.

And the stock looks pretty darn nice, too.  See how that thing feels when you touch a few off  - if the recoil is ok with you then don't bother with a newer sporter stock.

One of my older 8s is a VZ-24 with a cut down military stock and brother lemme tellya that thing wallops your shoulder when you bench it - but, the stock doesn't weigh anything and doesn't wear a recoil pad so your stock should be really ok to shoot with.  HTH.  Mikey.
