Rubber grip for my Ruger New Model SBH Hunter
« on: December 02, 2004, 06:12:27 AM »
I am looking for rubber Hogue grips for my New Model Ruger SBH Hunter.  I went to my local gun shop and all they could give me was grips for the Blackhawk that will not fit the Hunter model.  I tried them out...No luck.  I am going back today to see if they have anything else.  I have seen grips out on the net for the square trigger guard Hunters but not the round trigger guard like mine has.  Do you guys know anything about hooking my 44 up with some nice rubber grips?

Rubbers on a SA? Sacrilidge! :-)   Try Pachmayer.  I know they make 'em.

Pretty sure Hunters are all round. You proberly saw ones for regular SBH's with the square style.

I know...I know...I didn't want to remove those beautiful black laminate grip panels from my Hunter.  I am doing it because of the feel I have when hunting with this firearm.  I want the consistent grip and feel that rubber grips provide.  BTW, I did purchase a Hogue Monogrip for my Hunter...It fits well...Although it is for the square trigger guard.  Hogue's website says that they do not make one for the round trigger guard and that you can fill tiny void with some type of stuff(the name escapes me right now).  Once the grips are installed though you don't notice an issue...The feel is great and I can't wait to shoot this thing.  Gotta get out there before going hunting again with it to make sure I am still on using this grip.

Hey!! You can put the rubber ones on to shoot, and a nice set of wood for lounging in the safe.  I have a pair of Herrett oversize grips for a Super Blackhawk if you are interested.  I could send you a pic.

Sacrilidge I say!  Besides if you're gonna mess up a nice SA with rubbers, why even bother changing them out just for safe residing?  No sir, maybe another set of nice SA style grips but rubbers on one... :noway:

It amazes me how some people talk down to other people about their personal preferences. All of my single-actions carry "rubbers" ---- why?? better control - thats why ! If the wood or laminates (or whatever) work better for you and are your preference - more power to ya. But to call using rubber grips on single-actions "sacrilige" - I disagree with you - sorry. In shooting , just as in life - one size does not fit all. Find what works for you and use it. No good is done cutting down someone elses choices.

Well sir, for one I was not "talking down" to anyone.  Perhaps a re-look at my previous two posts would alow you to notice the cute little smileys showing a humorous side to what I was posting.  Just as you say everyone is entitled to ther own opinion and make the choice which fits them best.  Yes, the rubbers can provide control differences that the tradtional style doesn't for some.  I myself once had pachmayer Grippers on my SBh.  Changed them back to the reg but yeah, still got them rubbers.  Just as a FYI, my personal preference is the laminates.

Um...I didn't take offense...I thougth it was funny.  I am using the rubber grips for hunting season because I was having a hard time getting a consistent grip with my gloves on and the Hogue grips did the trick.  I will probably switch out the rubbers for the laminate wood when shooting in nice weather using ym bare hands.  I just like the look of those laminates better.  But the rubber does look pretty mean too.  Oh well...

Yes! Another laminate person.     Another thought I had... Although I've never actually seen it done, I've heard of people using a rubber finger grooved sleeze on thier single actions.  Not sure if a larger sized grip is required or if a smaller szed sleeve is used.  Just another option.

ive found just the opposite. Especially with guns bigger then .44mags they dont allow the gun to roll consistantly in your hand and my accuracy suffers with them and on real big sixguns they can be painful. The gun rolling in the hand helps absorb some of the recoil and ive even taken skin of my hand with rubbers. Everyone has there opinion and i even have some on DA guns were i dont want them to roll but not on any of my single actions will you see a pair.

Lloyd and all - like I said in my post - whatever works for you is fine. Each of our experiences is different. I have been shooting IHMSA handgun silhouette since 1980; and for the first 18 years almost excusively in Revolver class. MY experience is this - I have found that when "I" used wood grips on my Super Blackhawks, I would get vertical stringing. This was because of the rolling of the gun in my hand. When I installed Pachmayrs, the vertical stringing ceased. With the addition of a glove took care of any chafing from the rubber grip. My Freedom Arms 353 came with a beautiful set of rosewood grips that felt good in my hand. Guess what ?? vertical stringing ! Put on the FA Pachmayrs and problem ceased. Now, I know - some people have not had this problem. These have been "my" experiences. I did not mean to offend anyone with what I said. But, if you read and enjoy these forums as much as I do, you will notice that some posters think that their way of thinking is gospel - everyone elses opinion is trash. Open discussion is a good thing - we can take what we read and decide what might be best thing for us to use. I am sorry that I did not see the humorous intent of what was said. Maybe we should all watch what we type - the written word does not always show the real emotion and intent of a statement or belief.

my opinion...wood, or in my case antler...I want it to roll baby...now shooting that long distance stuff...I can see your point...but for me 50m is along way off with a hand gun...I want less pain...with cowboy loads, or 44specials...sure...when it gets to the hot stuff, Heck I prefer to shoot it one handed to alow it to rollup better, to hands are needed for 25m and out, but for 25m and closer...the roll factor is the reason I think my sbh 4 5/8 recoils less then my 7.5 inch SRH or the POS Desert Eagle(I know, what was I thinkin'  )...
plus the Elk Antlers just feel right, and look oh so pretty...if I ever get my SBH 10 inch...I will most likey us antlers too...

:-D Given that it wears new-fangled electronic optics you could not possibly ruin the "traditional lines" of that sixgun by using rubber grips:)

Its your gun, use what you like

I wish Hogue made the black rubber grips to fit the SBH Hunter with the Bisley grip.  The Bisley grip is nice but I could use a little more to fill my hand.
