Found my boar bullet!!!
« on: January 29, 2003, 01:15:46 AM »
Hey guys, I tried out the fairly new Barnes 45-70, 300 grain XFN bullet yesterday. Finally, the weather cooperated long enough for me to trudge through the snow (I beat the freezing rain by about one and a half hours) and set things up. Accuracy was superb. At 50 yards, ALL three shot groups touched holes except on one target. One shot out of that three was about a finger (1/2 inch) away from the rest. I think I flinched a bit. I also shot into a bundle of old magazines which was about a foot thick. Both bullets stopped just ONE magazine short of going clear through. I had them bundled with duct tape, from all directions, and after the second shot, the bundle was blown apart and a real mess to carry to the big trash can.... here are the pictures and I am impressed. Copper fouling, as can be the case with Barnes X bullets was significant, however, it cleaned out completely with Barnes CR-10 cleaner WITHOUT any brushing. Just using patches did the job and dissolved it completely... Here are the pictures of the recovered rounds: The bullet on the left shed one petal and retained 97.0% of it's weight. The bullet on the right retained 99.8% of it's original weight. Both bullets are 300 grains...

Good job!  Nice photos.  The 45/70, kinda hard to improve on that one...

IronKnees,

The Barnes X Bullet is the ONLY bullet that I use on hogs.  This year I shot one in particular with a .300 Win. Mag. and PMC 180 grain Barnes-X.  The pig was about 250 pounds and about 50 yards away.  Even though it was down at the first shot, I shot it 2 more times just to make sure.  Believe it or not, I did recover 1 bullet and it mushroomed perfectly.

As for the Barnes cleaner, I use it also and it does a FANTASTIC job.  Just make sure that you don't let the barrel soak for more than 10 minutes because it can cause problems.

Welcome to the Barnes X club for hogs! :D

Yup... been using them ever since they first came out. In 1995 I took a nice boar at Tellico Junction with a .308 XBT at 2400 fps with my .30-06. Here is it's pic... I like Butches Bore Shine a little better than CR-10, but I use both, and both are great products... BTW, didn't recover the bullet from this one...

Iron Knees,

Is there any particular reason why you like the Butch's product over the Barnes cleaner?  Just curious.

Well... that's kind of hard to quantify. I just think it works a little faster and takes a bit less work...

When I finish using up the Barnes cleaner I guess that I'll give the other one a try.  Thanks for the info.

Well, don't get me wrong, both are outstanding products well worth their own merrits. I just think the Butches Bore Shine is easier and faster...

Any field results yet?

IronKnees,

Any field results yet on the use of this bullet on boar?  I'm going on a boar hunt in a few weeks and was planning on using a 300 gr Hornady HP in my 45-70 (Encore pistol).  This is a load I word up for deer and have stepped up the powder a bit for the boar.  Seams to work on paper and expands good through 1 1/2 wood, not sure about penetration though.  But I've been reading your posts and am thinking of maybe trying the Barnes you talked about, if I have time to work up a load I've got to get one finished for my back-up first.

Ullr.
I wish I had better news for you, but the hunt that GB and I were going to do in mid April has been temporarily postponed... I do intend to use this bullet sometime this summer, but it will be a while yet. I had a medical problem pop up, and GB has some logistic problems to get around, so the hunt has been put back a while... However, I have every confidence in the Barnes XBT bullet and am really looking forward to using it...

Dave I have rescheduled for this fall. Date not yet determined. Maybe we can still get together for it. If not I'll probably just take Faye and let her kill one.

has anyone tried the 310 gr. hammerhead hardcast 44 load from garrett cartridges. Am thinking of using this load in my SBH. Understand this load penetrates more than a 375 HH in wet newsprint
