lot more recoil than 375 H&H
« Reply #1 on: December 06, 2004, 07:33:11 AM »
I have shot 375 H&H's several times & don't find the recoil too bad....quite a bit less than my heavily loaded 45-70's.
I have not as of yet shot the 375 RUM, but from what I've read & heard, it kicks a heap more than the H&H....about like the 458 WM.
That is a LOT more recoil than the H&H, plus the ammo costs more than twice as much as H&H ammo.
I'd look for the H&H due to the fact that the 375 RUM will probably go the wayside soon....nobody else is chambering it, which tends to indicate that this will soon be a handloaders cartridge.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

I believe the September 2004 issue of Guns and Ammo had an article by Craig Boddington that compared the various 375s. Included in this was a comparison of recoil. If it wasn't September, then it was approximately that month. Perhaps you can find it in a library. They may also sell back issues. See gunsandammomag.com

The recoil of the RUM was very high for a 375. So much so that I would personally prefer a larger bullet diameter and heavier bullet if I were in the market for something of that power level.

msorenso,

While I don't own a .375 RUM, I do own two .375 H&H's, a .375 Weatherby Magnum and a .378 Weatherby Magnum.  In rifles of near equal weight(about 9.5 to 10.5 lbs.) shooting bullets of the same weight(300 gr.) the following is about what you can expect recoil wise.

.375 H&H Mag. at 2,530 fps. will have about 41.0 ft. lbs. of free recoil
.375 Wby. Mag. at 2,700 fps. will have about 48.0 ft. lb. of free recoil
.375 Rem. Ultra Mag. at 2,800 fps. will have about 53.0 ft. lb. of free recoil
.378 Wby. Mag. at 2,900 fps. will have about 59.0 ft. lb. of free recoil

Take into account that the .375 RUM is not selling well and may soon be dropped from the Remington line I would look to a different cartridge.  Personally I feel everyone needs a .375 H&H in the safe.  Excellent cartridge well noted for their accuracy.  But if the H&H version doesn’t float your boat then rechamber it to the .375 Weatherby(my personal choice).  The best part about the .375 Weatherby is you can still use .375 H&H ammo in it.  Take about versatile.  Lawdog

I don't know if the 375Rum is selling that well or not but I see that Remington has it chambered in 3 different rifles.
1. Model 700 LSS (Laminated Stock Stainless) Man. #6306
2. Model 700 Custom KS Mountain rifle Man. # 7024
3. Model 700 AWR (Alaskan Wilderness Rifle) Man. #7158

I've had my 375 LSS for several months now and wouldn't want  to go back to only a 375 H&H. I reload for mine and can go down to H&H velocities or up to the top velocity/recoil that I can handle.

I think you should give it up and get a 22lr.  I've heard you can't hit the side of a barn.

(just so everyone knows, I work with him and I have been pushing him to get the 375 h&h because I think the RUM will disappear in 2-3 years)

My brother has one,BDL S/S.It does kick but it also does massive Damage on the other end.I've shot a deer with it,Not a twitch, didn't lose any meat, heart and lungs were soup.I've got pictures too.Yes I do Reload for him,if you don't reload price some Weatherby ammo, even the brass.Make sure you get Double Dovetail rings,it went through 2 sets of Burris Windage rings, was snapping the windage screws away from the rings in 12 shots.

I did finally get one about a month ago.  Love it.  Thanks for the extra info. If your brother wants to sell it I have have a freind that wants one in wood not synthetic.  Mine is in LSS though I would prefer a bdl format as well.  What scope does he use brand and power? Thanks for all the help :D

Believe it or not it's a Simmons Aetec,2.8-10.With Leupold Bases and Burris Rings,Double Dovetail. It's held up for quite a few shots so far,and it's on it's 3rd set of rings. He had the same set-up on his 300RUM too.So far so good.

I love my 375 RUM, I broke two of the Leopold bases before I switched to the separate bases with the torx screws instead of the the side screw. After that I pulled the trigger on the range and the trigger broke off, turns out the triggers are pot metal and very cheap. That is now fixed and I am taking it up to Alaska again for some more black bear hunting. My big success story with this gun was dropping a 10ft bear on the Alaskan peninsula with one shot. He did manage to crawl around a bit so I put four more shots in him, but I am convinced the first shot that went through his lung region made his internal organs a soupy mess. In closing I will say replace that trigger with a simple kit the will cost you less then $100, use good mounts, and go with a muzzle break to help you enjoy the 375 RUM even more. I am going to post my brown bear story with photos shortly, be sure to check it out.

I have now been shooting my 375 RUM for a while and have worked up 2 loads for it.

260gr Nosler Accubond @ 3020fps

300gr Nosler Partition   @ 2750fps

The only addition that I have added to my stock Remington 700 LSS is a Magnum Kick-Eez recoil pad and a synthetic stock with the same Kick-Eez recoil pad installed.

The recoil of the lighter synthetic stock takes a bit more to get used to though but is still very managable.

When there is only one rifle, the Rem. Model 700 XCR, chanbered for a cartridge they sometimes get very hard to find.  I know a guy that is looking for one and has decided to go the custom route to get it.  Lawdog

Kenstone,
Just a FYI, when I was looking for one back in January I did alot of research on how to get one.  Until I finally found one in LSS, which in it self was a stroke of luck because I had everyone looking high and low.  I called Remington and the 375 RUM IN XCR, WHICH IS THE ONLY FORMAT IT COMES IN! Any way Remington will not produce any until August or September. If I was you I would put my order in now for one.  Also it is in 24 inch barrel vs, the 26 it use to come in.  If I can say anything about it that is very sweet! :D

Hi Friends

I really like my Remington 700 375 Ultra Mag and would not let it go because of the kick. YUP!~ She kicks like a young Mule. Very seldom do I get to take it hunting because it is my Elk gun and we just don't have many Elk here in Alabama.

I drove through Alabama and shot two elk.  One was brown and white and didn't run to fast.  The cow elk was taller and they even let me keep the saddle that was on her.

The walnut/blued M700’s in .375 RUM were one of the first models that Remington dropped although there are a few around but you'll have to look to find one.  They listened to some “expert on hunting” that told them all hunters wanted stainless rifles.  WRONG!!  Lawdog

As long as the action/magazine is long enough I don't see why not.  The .300 RUM has an OAL of 3.530" and the .375 RUM has an OAL of 3.600".  As for me coming across a .375 RUM, I'll keep a look out but don't hold your breath.  I don't shop for newer Remington rifles(I only purchase the ones manufactured before 1980) and don't care for any of the RUM line so me finding one will be an accident.  Sorry.  Lawdog

I started collecting Weatherby Mark V Deluxe's in 1963 when I got my first one(won it in a Big Buck Derby - it was the Grand Prize for the heaviest weight field dressed buck(a 172.5 lb. 4x4 Blacktail)) and I fell in love with them.  BUT I only collect the Mark V Deluxe in the Weatherby calibers that were offered in that model.  The only calibers that I have yet to get are the .416 and .460 Weatherby Magnum’s.  My problem is finding these calibers in Mark V Deluxe’s that came originally WITHOUT a muzzle brake.  I only have one rifle that came with a muzzle brake and I haven’t shot it yet.  As far as the RUM line of cartridges go I have or see no need for them.  Also I won’t purchase Remington bolt action rifle that was made after 1980.  My opinion(problems) of newer Remington rifles is well documented.  If you want to know my reason send me a PM and I would be glad to tell you my reasons why.  Lawdog
