Too Lazy to Use Black Powder?????
« on: December 04, 2004, 08:09:04 AM »
I have had great results with Goex FFF   (80 gr) behind a TC sabot PTX 300 gr in my new Sidekick..  I clean between shots with a patch wet with Fantastik  (buy at grocery store), one dry patch , load and fire.. repeat..   groups running under 2 inches at 103 yds, and one group at one and onequarter inch  (three shot groups..) When I'm done, I clean up with Fantasik, dry and lightly oil bore, and done...  I have used this cleaning product for years on my flinters, never have had a speck of rust.. Les

Try straight Fantastik, wet patch,  brush, wet patch,  two or three dry patches,   and then see if your cleaning method, whatever it is gets any more fouling out afterwards...  (You can even use your "ten foot pole" if it makes you happy)   respectfuly...Les

I'm one who is in favor of easy cleanup.  That's one of the selling points on these new inlines.  Used to shoot a TC renegade and sold it when I got away from hunting several years ago.  Now that I've regained interest I really like the simplicity of the Sidekick and 777.
I'll be trying the Fantastic cleanup.  Using Windex now,,and it does well too.

I like the Fantastik in my Patch Solution (home brew   ).

I have been using about 30% of the Fantastik "Orange Action" type on the patches between shots, and has worked well for me this past year.

As said, it works well for the cleanup and for soaking breech plug in during the other cleanup chores.

Its pretty risky to pour boiling water on a barrel with a scope mounted,  or imerse the breech in a bucket of hot water with scope attached..  It seems a little easier to me to keep it simple...  (If Daniel Boone had had Fantastik, I think he would have used it...)    Les

OK Les Stanley and TOGO, you got me interested. Les what turned me off was your saying to use oil in/on the ML bore after cleaning. I have used "Natural Lube" or TC's natural lube products almost since they cam out and have great luck with them, no more petroleum products in my ML's for me. I have been using 777 in place of Pyrodex for a couple of years now and have good luck with it also by would not feel hurt if I had to go back to Pyrodex. The clean up is just so easy and "smell free" with 777. Just some hot water and thats it (I do however use a couple of drops of Dawn dishwashing detergent in the water for old times sakes, hard to teach an old dog new tricks!!!
Tell me more about Fantastick or Simple Green (great cleaner by the way), no water and lube the barrel after? No rust inside? Sounds almost to good to be true. Do you think it would work with Pyrodex or 777 also. Thanks for any input and information....<><....

I use Windex, get the same results.  I spray with Windex, then a brush.  Spray again, then patches till clean.  Then spray with WD-40 and a couple more patches.  Then an oily one.  I clean the Breech Plug with Windex and an old tooth brush, then WD-40, oil, lube, replace in gun.  Done.   Hot Water is too messy and takes too long.  Plus, I get rust with hot water, no matter how much I oil them.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Went to Michigan for a black powder deer hunt..  thats a long story..  and I'll get back to you guys when I get a few minutes... I have been useing straight Fantastik , two wet patches,   brush it good with brass brush, dry it out with a couple of patches... kill any remaining black in the bottom corners of the breech area with a good dose of  (gasp)  good ole gun oil, and this method has kept my flint rifles in good shape for 20 plus years... these rifles are ones I built from scratch parts..  green mountain barrels ,Pecetonika (spelling??) stocks,  siler locks,, definitly not cheap rifles, and I would not risk ruining them..I do keep an eye on them, and have never had any rust..  I am also skeptical about not mixing  wonderlube or 1000 plus  with oil..  I think it is a selling ploy to sell more of that stuff... I use wonderlubed patch material, and It will keep shooting all day without cleaning as at rendesvous shoots,  and have killed a dozen or more deer and antelope with patched round balls and wonderlube... but have always used oil as in petroleum oil in the rifles...  no problems yet...  best regards...Les
