Yep, it finally arrived, was located, NICS came back on, a manager was located, and I left [errr escorted] Wally world with my 223rem UV. Everything seems tight and finished appropriately for this inexpensive American made rifle--not too bad. Still looks like regular rifling to me and not microgroove--doesn't say microgroove on it like Marlins. Trigger pull is acceptable, actually better than I thought! Cleaned it and fired a test round. Firing pin strike was quite off center but acceptable. Only problem was that the action opened up....

!!! I'll check this out further when my midway order gets here with the zee rings and I go to the range for extensive testing. If it continues opening....."Houston, we have a problem"!

Flush the inside of the action underneath the breech face with some good lubricant...anything but WD-40 will work well for this. All you are trying to do is flush out all the GUNK that these are infamous for having in them from the factory NIB. Pay special attention the area around the locking lug at the very bottom of the acion. Depress the barrel release lever beside the trigger and spray the crap out of it. Relese the lever and spray it some more. Then work the thing several times until it feels like the whole movement of the release lever is actually moving the locking lug. If the spray lub doesn't work then try some Brake cleaner like you can get at an auto parts store. Cleans good and dries right up afterwards. Be careful not to get any on the wood tho as it will harm the finish. Follow up again with some good lub and shoot it. Should solve your problem, if not, then call H&R.........976-632-9393.....they're good folks and quite accomodating.

I guess I have been lucky,I have never had a handi that would pop open upon firing.I have owned several H&R and Nefs and never had a problem.....Yet.If you spray it out with brake cleaner be sure to remove the stock first.Remove the butt pad and loosen the bolt with a long 3/8 extension and rachet with a 9/16 socket.And remove the forearm with a phillips head screw driver.Hope this fixes your problem with the opening up.If it dosen't send the sucker to H&r to get fixed,and tell them you want a trigger job on it also.

When the action is closed and you can move the latch lever up and down, that means the locking latch is not sufficienly entering the latch notch in the end of the barrel. That is why the action is popping open.

This happens in combination with a weak latch compression spring that holds the latch in place during the discharge of a cartridge. Get the factory to fix it if it persists or fix it youself after cleaning the latch and the the latch seat with a non oil based solvent like aceton or alcohol.

I was told by the factory you should have some play in there.
when I sent my older 30-06 in for a once over, one of the things I asked them about was why my lever had litlle if any play, as compared to my new 223 that had about 1/8" freeplay. was told there should be a little freeplay to insure lock-up.

when it came back, it had freeplay. as well as a new muzzle crown, some new internal parts. all done for free! :grin:

As far as sighting in. When starting on new rifle scope combo, I use 50yds to get it on paper NEAR the bull then go back to 100.

I'd venture a guess that the Win 45gr loads should be about 1.2" high at 100 to be on at 200, maybe 1.1" high. These suckers shoot flat. That should be a dead on aim to 250yds on a target the size of a coyote.

Usually it will take 200-300 rounds before these guns start shooting their best so be patient. Mine was only about 150, but my sons took closer to 400. Now it will shoot sub MOA with 3 shot groups with the Win value pak all day long.

Don't know about the Black hills stuff, but as long as it's not LOADED to NATO specs yous hould be OK.
