Its not soo much the draw weight that kills a deer but the kenetic energy that the arrow possess.  That said when my brother started bowhunting with us he was 13 and was only pulling around 45 pounds and got a complete pass through.  I wouldn't go too much lighter than that if at all and make sure he uses cut on contact broadheads because until he gets to 60 or 65 pounds I wouldn't trust mechanicals.  Make sure he can put it where it needs to go and keep his shots close and he should have a ton of fun.  It is a great sport.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer with his buddies for a lifetime.

This isn't a beer gut!!  Its a feul tank for a sex machine!!

My ex-wife took 2 bucks shooting 40 pounds.  1 at 30 yards & 1 at 20 yards.  Both complete pass thrus with a 3 blade fixed blade thru the lungs.
I set her up with a little heavier shaft for penetration & it works just fine.  My daughter shoots 45 pounds & I also set her up with a little heavier shaft.  I give up some speed for the weight & they keep their shots mostly 25 yards or less.  I took several Deer as a kid with a 45 pound recuve & 3 blade head on wood arrows.  Shot placement is the important factor plus a sharp Broadhead. Stay away from expandibles. I always prefer a 3 blade, even with light poundage.  I plan on taking my Daughter hog Bowhunting with the 45 pounder she shoots.  Good luck & welcome to a sport that is great.  My 48th year.
always thankful

You might want to check your state laws.  Many states have a min. bow weight, arrow weight, arrow length and some the ability to throw an arrow a min. distance.

Out to 20 yards I would think 40-45.

Keep the shots to 20 yards and go with 40 to 45 lb. But do check your State laws to make sure.  :D

40-45 is plenty for the kind of distances a beginner would like to take a shot. Like others have said, do check ur state regs...good luck to him  :D

Like a couple of the guys said, ck your state laws.  Also a cut on contact broadhead will help penetration alot.  My boys both started in the 40 pound range and I limited their shots to 15 yds.  Another thing I did was use one of the 3-D deer as a target for them to shoot at out of a treestand.  Especially for people new to archery, who have not learned to use their back muscles to draw with, it is alot easier to pull back a bow while standing on the ground then when drawing slowly while up in a treestand.

1.  check your state regulations.

2.  see what your son can shoot comfortably.

3.   use heavy arrows and either a two or three blade broadhead.

4.   keep those 'heads sharp.

5.   practice, practice, practice.  teach him what his limitations are.

6.   stay within those limitations, and put the arrow where it counts.

follow those rules and you will be fine.  try to push a bow that is too heavy on him and he will not be able to shoot to his potential.   concentrate on doing the above and lastly....enjoy your time together.   good luck.
