polaris 400?
« on: December 06, 2004, 05:31:36 PM »
i notice a lot of folks throughout this thread seem to have 400 polaris's. i have a 500 and am extremely happy with it, but wonder if the 400 is just as good. are they much cheaper than the 500's?do they come with the same features/accessories? i've definitely made up my mind that i'm not going any bigger than 500 ever cause i don't want to have to manuever any more weight around than i have to now. if i was to go bigger i think i would have to buy a ranger or something for more power or toting capability.

I just don't know much about the Polaris 400.  I can't imagine that it would be any less of an atv, other than engine size , than it's larger sibling.   Maybe someone can help out.

The 400 is basically the same bike as the 500ho except with a smaller engine. Overall it's a good bike. If I was to buy one of the two though I would buy the 500ho.

The main difference between the Sportsman 400 & the Sortsman 500 HO, is the "Overbored" engine with a different carburator & the EBS "Engine Brake System", which the 400 does NOT have. Otherwise the machines are Identical. According to the Specs, they even weigh the same.
I have both a 2001 Sportsman 500 HO & a 2002 Sportsman 400. My 400 had the "EBS" added as an Option. The only difference you will notice in the power is the Pull the 500 has when you "Punch It".
The EBS Option is nice though, especially in Hilly Terrain. My local dealer offers the EBS as an Option for $150.00, as long as you get it before you take delivery of the machine. He has a deal worked out with Polaris to send back the "Non EBS" parts back to Polaris for Credit.

The Polaris 400 is a 2 stroke motor (gas/oil mix) while the 500 is 4 stroke.
The 400 2 stroke motor can be modded to make alot of horsepower if you want to mod it that much. With the 500 the engine mods are limited.
I own a Polaris Scrambler with a ported 400 motor and it is a very fast atv. With the 2 stroke motors you do have to rebuild the top end occasionally but it's not difficult. 2 strokes are probably more for guys that like to tinker with mechanical things like I do.

Actually you are wrong because there is no more 400 ScramblerÂ…As far as I know that bike was discontinued. Now all there is in the 400 for Polaris is the 4 Stroke 400 Sportsman.
