Never knew such a thing existed.  Try posting your query under the "Misc. H&R, Collectables & Handguns" section of this forum.

that's a find !

i think you should send it to me for a few years of evaluation and field testing !

what did you pay for it ?

most likely it is what is called a "Hardware Gun". around that time period stores like montgomery & wards down to the local hardware store sold good field grade side by sides for reasonable prices. you will find shotguns like this made by stevens and springfield arms and a few others. i guess you found one made by H&R !

i have two .410 side by sides that have patent dates from the early 1900's, one is definitely a springfield arms and the other is most likely a guild gun. i can't identify the marks on the water table or barrel of the 2nd gun. guild guns were guns built by apprentices under the tutilage of master gunsmiths

guild guns are usually diamonds in the rough, great finds at gun shows and swap meets. typically, they don't command big bucks but are fine guns in every aspect of craftsmenship and durability. one of my best field guns is a belgium 16 gauge guild gun i bought for $250 with engraving that rivals some top end guns. it was probably made by some young gunsmith in belgium who was learning the trade. the only reason i know about this, and hardware guns, was because i brought the gun to an elderly gunsmith who was able to identify the markings on the belgium gun.

so have fun shooting it !!!

It is a 410 shotgun but it has 44cal stamped on the rib between the barrels.

is it a double trigger or single trigger with a barrel select ?

some 410's can shoot 45 colts, like that handi survivor gun. the barrel markings must refer to some black power 44 caliber round. i've never seen a 44 cal marking on a 410 but i've never seen a lot of things !

are there any other markings on the barrel or on the water table ?

ok, so you have removed the barrel from the receiver and looked on the underside of the barrel, the flat part, that touchs the receiver, there are no marks ?

you will usually see a proof test mark of some sorts.

if you can, snap a digital picture and post here so we can check this most cool little gun out.

i find this kind of stuff one of the most interesting parts of the hobby. that is, trying to figure out the history behind a firearm !

look on the water table for an indication of choke. it is probably full and full.

44 cal refers to old blackpowder shot loads in  .44 caliber casings.

That's a sweet looking gun. Why can't they crank out something like that now?
