Light loads for 45/70
« on: December 07, 2004, 10:25:48 AM »
My son in law has a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 that he wants to use as a heavy cover Blacktail rifle. Naturally he is not looking for the most powerful loads but not really what would be considered a reduced load either. Anyone have a load that would fit that purpose. Thanks. POW

I loaded up some 300 grain Sierra HPFN bullets in front of IMR 4198.
42.1 grains felt pretty potent in my Thompson Contender so I dropped back to 39.9 grains and they grouped decently. I haven't put any across the chronograph.  I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used this bullet on deer as that is my intention for this load. :)
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

Marlin 1895 45-70
300 grain Hornady hollow point seated to 2.55" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primers
50 grains H4198 START
55 grains H4198 HUNTING LOAD
Adapted from Hodgdon #27

The HUNTING LOAD achieves 2180 fps from my 22" barrel so it should produce about 2100 fps in the 1895G.  Its accurate in my rifle and makes a great deer load.

Reloader, I have killed a half dozen deer with the 300 grain Sierra hollow point.  Caliber-sized hole in, up to two-inch hole out.  None went more than 10 yards.  Your load out of the Contender is pretty mild, but should be effective.

favorite 'LITE" load is 13.5 grains Unique with either 300 grain Cast W/GC or a 405 grain Cast W/GC....accurate,ecconomical and can shoot them all day long....

Deadeye, I use 12.5 grains Unique and plain base or hollow base bullets. Accuracy could not be better and using PB is a considerable savings.

IMR's SR4759 powder, with 405gr cast bullets will give 1200-1400 fps, which from my use, yields good accuracy in a Handi, and recoil that is not flinch inducing.
compared to shooting remington 305gr factory ammo, which is supposedly trapdoor pressure, the 4759 loads are pussycats.

the best part is that SR4759 is listed as reduced load powder in several other kicker calibers such as 25-06.
