hi all new to the forum

i have an ar-15 and an su-16, so i have a bunch of 5.56 ammo on hand. i know 223 chambers are tighter, but i want to know is the encore chamber so much tighter that it would put my gun into the unsafe pressure range. this ammo is intended purely for inexpensive practice, but ill eat it up with the other two if it poses any danger in the encore.

any help is appreciated

I never shot the mil. ammo, but it is the same as the .223, you`ll have no problems shooting it.

the 5,56 chamber is not the same as a 223 they are very close but not the same.
I believe the 5.56 is little longer and the chamber is not as tight as the 223 Remington.

im pretty sure your right rickyp without any hard data im not gonna shoot any mil stuff outta her, but i might check a few rounds to see how they chamber just to see how close it is

I have shot 5.56mm/223 for many years thru my contender barrel with no problem. For all purposes they are one in the same. Mil brass is a little thicker thats about all.

Slightly more than a month ago / maybe longer, a similar question was asked and someone went into quite detail about the pros and cons. What I remember from it was that it was fine to shoot .223 in a 5.56 -- but not advisable to shoot 5.56 in a .223 barrel because of the tolerances mentioned. Wish I could recall more of the post but remember telling myself that I would probably not do it in my new .223 barrel. With the availability of inexpensive .223 ammo, why take the chance -- just my $.02 worth. :?

Your encore will not know the difference. None of my Contenders have.

hey steve p was there a significant change in your zero switching between the two? or no more then switching between different bullet weights>

Notice a difference in brand and in bullet weight, but it does not really make noticable point of aim concern until you get past 100-150 with my gun. Shoot rock chucks and squirrels out to 100-125 yards, no difference in point of aim. More difference in the way they flop with fmj vs soft point.
