That is a very good question to which there appears to be a very elusive answer! I've searched the net looking for rifle ballistics for the .357 maxi, but have struck out. The best I have found is .357 maxi pistol ballistics and can only go from there. The nearest I've figured out is ~1800-2000fps for a 170gr bullet in a rifle. I just bought a chrono and expect my .357 Maxi handi will be one of the first to be shot over it. FWIW, it does shoot well with the Dan Wesson ammo from Bullseye, less than 2" at 100yds. Bullseye is the only place that I have found that sells factory maxi ammo. Brass is available, though. Target squares are 1"

From my Handi I get 2060 fps from the Hornady 180 XTP, and an even 2000 from the Remington 180 SJHP. I can eek out 1850 from the Remington 200 RN made for the 35 Remington. The 357 Max is more a ballistic twin to the 30-30 than to the 35 Remington, but the 35 Remingot shooters I have spoken to quote very similar figures for factory 35 Rem. loadings. The performance of the Hornady 180 XTP on a spike I shot last year was perfect, and dispatched the deer as well as any 30-30 I've ever seen.

My Marlin 336 chrono'd 200gr factoty stuff right at 2040fps, darn near what the factory claims of 2050.  Never tried any other load.  I also never got too attached to it either.  Seemed like an oversize 30-30 to me and I wanted more range.

Traded it in for a 223 UV and have never been happier.  I also now have my 375 Win Big Bore.  BIG difference there.

Yep ,Handi I've got a 375 BB to, I feel its the BEST lever round,Such power and moderate recoil. Not the power of 444M or 45/70,but enuff .
But I was wanting to get a .357Mag in a Single shot rifle to shoot and reload for ,when I came across a deal on a 357Max in a Rossi single shot ,sending $$ today for it ,Theres not much ink spilled about it ,used in a rifle, from what I've read its a good little round with bullets ,at 180gr. & 200gr.  ,I'm thinking bout useing Rem. 180 gr.  HP with it. or maybe try some pointed bullets .

I have been using the little gun powder for the max for about a year and half now and it works well.  I am also currently loading the 180 xtp, 180 sjhp, and the 200grn spire point.  I really do like the 200 grainer at 100 yards I have the same point of impact as the 180 xtp's.  The max is great I have used my contender to take whitetail, mule deer, and wild hogs and only once do I remember having to take more than one shot.  Since I rechambered my handi it has become my favorite play around with gun.  I plan on re-chronoing this round in the spring to see for sure but last year I was exceeding the 35 rem velocities posted in the Hornady reloading manual.
I must be crazy.

OK, enough talk about 375's. I have been looking for one for years. My Dad has a Marlin and it shoots great. Just want one for myself. I wish Marlin would come out with a slick little 1894 in 357 max with a 20'' barrel. They could do it (IF THEY WANTED TO)

I'm working on the power issue too.  Using info from Paco Kelly's Article and the Hornady 270gr meant for the 375 H&H, but with the nose cut off to make it 250gr.

So far very encouraging, but still working up loads.

Handirifle, about 10 years ago I found a M94 BB 375 Win. that was top eject and had a scout scope set up. I should have bought it. It was NICE.

Yep... shot over my chronograph.... I think it was 2650 actually.  Remember those pictures of the frozen chicken I put up a few months ago?  That was those silvertips at work.    Those things really come apart at that speed.

The hardcast ought to do well.  Paco's article hit home for me cause I one of those guys that always looks at something to see how I can change it.  Not always improve it mind you, just change.

The trick I'm learning on the 38-55 brass is the bullets have to be shorter forward of the canelure.  That was no problem since I'm cutting the nose off a spire point bullet anyway.  Those Hornady interlokt's for the H&H act like a partition at 375 Win velocities, even the accellerated ones.

Shooting a shortened 200gr from the 38-55 brass behind 37gr of RL7 really puts some zip in the old gun.  For the 200gr'ers to work I just have to cut off the 1/16th" lead nose.
When I get another digital camera I'll post some pics of the expansion of these bullets (Hornady's).

True, they wouldn't be any good for much that you need penetration for but they would be great for small varmints.  I expect possums and skunks would be dramatically dispatched with those little grenades.  Trajectory probably isn't too bad either.  We never did much with them after the chicken incident. :-)

As I recollect, my dad always cussed the 30-06 win silvertips for blowing up on the deer and elk they killed, he switched to corelokts by the time I started hunting with him in the late 50's.
