I would start by doing a search of this forum and maybe some of the other hunting and shooting forums. It has been discussed many times.

For my part I have a Remington 700 BDL in 17 that I really enjoy. I have taken a quite a few coyotes with it and spent many hours shooting ground squirrels behind it. It is a great performer. No noticeable recoil.

I shoot the Hornady 25 grain HP in mine, mainly because the fellow I bought it from had many many boxes of them and I haven't managed to run out yet. Now that I have moved to Alaska I doubt I will ever run out of them. I will use it up here for fox, coyote and lnyx.

If you are planning on shooting coyotes with it be aware that after 200 yards it is running out of steam fast. It will really lay a coyote out, but ranges should be kept under 300 and preferably under 250 for sure dispatches.

I have not tried any of the custom bullets for it nor the Hornady 20 grain V-max simply because I have so many 25 grainers left to shoot up. I do have the bullets moly coated. It makes a dfference on how often I have to clean the barrel. Before I started moly coating, I had to clean the barrel every 25-40 rounds to maintain any accuracy. I went on a squirrel shoot shortly after I started moly coating and was able to maintain sub-moa accuracy after 200 rounds.

The 17 is a very fun round. I hope this helps. Mart

I have a REM Model 7 in .17 rem that I shoot exclusively for coyotes.  I have had more fun with this gun than any gun I have purchased in a lot of years.  Very accurate and for some reason a deadly round.  You would not believe how many dogs have just dropped in there tracks when hit by this little bullet.  I shoot 30 grain bergers but the 25 grain hornady is probably most popular bullet out there.  I would agree with the previous posters check out there in the archieves of most boards there is a lot of info on the 17.
