Welcome To Graybeard :D  You certainly came to the right place.
You probably have some good ideas by now just from browsing.
The firearm could be either shotgun or rifle. You can use both on private ground but may be restricted to the shotgun only if on public access.
What is your terrain like? Do you need something fast & flat that can reach out there or something light & fast handling like a carbine? Perhaps your access is heavy brush & hills where you would need a shotgun?
Anything You Can Offer may help a bunch.

Choochooo,
Welcome to Gray Beard Outdoors, First it would help if you could give us an idea what kind of country you will be hunting in. My thoughts would probobly be a 223 as there are more factory loads for it. The 223 will performe in about all conditions and terrain,With good accuracy. There are a bunch of good calibers you can choose from depending on what you want to do. Come back and tell us more about your self and the area you will be hunting in........Good Luck...........Joe............
