« on: December 08, 2004, 07:50:42 PM »
Hey guys i have a question. I am doing a project for school and it is on how hunting helps the health and wellbeing of animal populations. So for some information in my paper i need to know does anyone know a magazine or organization that gives money or supports in some way animal conservation?

Most states department of wildlife and forestry departments, as well as land-grant university natural resource departments, do a lot of extension to help landowners manage for wildlife.

The nature conservancy (environmentalists who put their money where their mouth is) is a decent outfit who buy land for the purpose of managing it for it's ecosystem or for certain wildlife species... I don't know how much hunting the deal with.

A lot of forest industry lease land for hunting, and probably accomodate wildlife management considerations in their plans.

I would start by contacting a university wildlife extension agent... try Texas A&M, as they have a pretty good forestry school there.

This looks like this might be the person to start with.  If they don't work out, there are other land grant universities.

To be honest I'm not sure what it is you're looking for. If it's money for your "project" I think you're out of luck. But if it's the names of folks who really do a lot to help wildlife there are a ton of them. All hunter funded.

Ducks Unlimited the oldest and biggest.
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
Quail Unlimited
Pheasants Forever
Safari Club International
North American Hunting Club via matching donation projects
Mule Deer Foundation
North American Bear Federation
North American Pronghorn Foundation
Wildlife Legislative Fund of America

To name a few

Let's start with the $ the hunters pay for their License!!
« Reply #6 on: December 10, 2004, 02:47:13 AM »
Sir, the monies collected for the license fees help to provide, habitat, wildlife areas,  project and studies.  The hunters contribute a lot to the sport and wildlife.  Also,  the growth of many populated areas has shrunk the size for wildlife to live in.  If their population was not controlled they would multiple until large numbers would starve and the cycle would start over.  We can't turn back the clock on population but we can assist in many ways to help the wildlife and the Hunters are one of the largest to do so!

Also check around for local fish and game clubs alot of them will do projects, they won't be large scale but it will probably help bring the message closer to home.

As an example a local bow club helps buy doing yearly hunter surveys, this data is used by the biologists to monitor herd health. There should be local examples of habitat reclamation or similar things.  I'd imagine the a local gun or fishing store could point you in the right direction for clubs near you.

:D In Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Trappers Assciation funds research done by the Wisconsin DNR. They also assist state biologists in studies and provide carcasses for research, such as a study of pesticide buildup in river otters in various parts of the state.
The Ruffed Grouse Society does habitat work, has their own biologists, and funds habitat work.
In WI we also have Whitetails Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and Wings over Wisconsin. I'm not personally familiar with what these groups do.
A group I am familiar with is North American Hunting Dog Association or NAVHDA. At various times they have done habitat improvement, helped with woodcock studies, and generally support the use of trained dogs as a conservation method.
Most of these organizations have websites where you can learn more about their activities. :agree:
