Could you just sand out the barrel channel with a dowel and some sandpaper to free float the barrel???
I looked at my sportster last night and there is about an 1/8" gap in there already but a dollar bill stops after about 1 inch into the gap.

After looking at my Sportsters, I think the forend will need sanding on the side to allow it to be installed without touching the sides of the barrel. Then the area under the barrel stud needs to be built up so all contact with the barrel is at the stud. I think there is a thread on this on the NEF/H&R centerfire forum.
