And the news keeps getting better & CAS farther off
« on: December 10, 2004, 08:55:31 AM »
OK, getting rotator culf surgery 12/15, so I decided to ride the bikes as much as I can before the "big" day.  The 1100 Shadow is nice, the pickup not as good as the old 600 but smooth at speed.  The "wife's"  goldwing is another story.  (We got it so she could ride passenger, hence:  her bike).

Brought it home from work last night (just one-up) and as I was turning it around in the driveway, engine dead, it started going over to the right.  Left shoulder is no good to hold it and the handle bars were tight to the right so mech. advantage for the right arm wasn't much.  Down it goes with me for the ride.  Figure the worst is a bit of chrome off the crash bars and some dust on my jacket;  WRONG!!!!

Got the right foot pinned under the right crash bar and now the two wheels and my foot are supporting all 13 million pounds of bike.  I had to tug with all my might to wrench my foot clear (the bike goes from instep to first 3 toes, all of them pretty much hamburger.

I go in wrap the foot and hobble around when wifey comes home and sees her bike "down" in the driveway.  Figures either the wrecker towed it home and I'm at ER or it just fell over.

Once we got it back up she noticed I was limping and the questions and anwsers started ending with, "You're an idoit!"  But she didn't want to sell her bike so other than limping around like a one-legged duck life is good(?)

At least I have my health(????)

Ranger does it sometimes seem that it rains more frequently, longer and heavier at your house than your neighbors?  Glad to hear you're not hurt bad.

It was good to protect the bike with your foot. Bike parts can be expensive and your foot will heal. Good luck with the shoulder. Lots of pards have had it done and returned to shooting.

Ranger, I have been teaching MSF classes for 20 years.  This is pretty common and is correctable (falling over - not your foot) with some practice on your part.  Solution is clutch control.  When you start a slow speed turn, if the engine dies or you disconnect the clutch and the bike is leaned, it falls over.  You need to practice slipping the clutch.  As long as there is power to the rear wheel, it won't fall down.  If you are going too slow with the clutch completely engaged, the engine will stall, you fall down.  If you think you can't make that tight of turn and you pull in the clutch, the bike falls.  Slip the clutch.  If it is out all the way, you are going too fast.  So you must slip it.  Keep enough power to the rear wheel to keep it pulling but not to where it want to go too fast.  You can drag a little rear brake if you wish.  It take some practice, but this is how the Shriners can do all those slow speed manuvers in the parades.  Always remember, as long as the clutch is pulling, you can't fall down.  Good luck.  (I can suggest some excersises if you like, e mail me)  44 Man

Cuts,
Nice shorts--I have a pair like that in neon blue!

44 Man,
Would appreciate whatever you might have.  I've always had a problem with the goldwing.  The shadow is great--gw seems too top heavy unless at speed.  The engine was dead and I was trying to duck-walk it back into the garage but all help is welcome.
