GP 100 for carry
« on: December 10, 2004, 11:16:46 AM »
I am thinking of purchasing a GP100 .357 for my home, but I have heard that they can be carried as a CCW. I don't currently have a CCW license, but I plan on getting one. Does anyone know of a holster that would make the 4" GP100 concealable? Is the GP 100 good for this purpose? I appreciate any replys.

Look at the 3" barrel GP100; lighter, easier to conceal, etc. Also you may wish to consider a Ruger® SP101 or a Taurus® Mdl 617. As for holsters it's hard to beat an Uncle Mike's® Belt Side for the money. As for leather try a Galco® Speed Scabbard or a F.L.E.T.C.H.; additionally a Desantis® 001 is always a good bet.

I use a Taurus® Mdl617 as my plain clothes and off duty gun. It's lighter, controllable, and gives you 7 shots of 357 or 38. Additionally the gun is less expensive & carries a LifeTime Warranty.

A friend of mine has the SP101 that I'm trying to get him to trade me; similar dimensions to the 2 or 3" GP100 if memory serves. For a revolver, it's a good concealment gun. I carry a Para P12 .45ACP in an Uncle Mike's IWB. The little Ruger drops right in and fits inside perfectly; it's lighter than the .45 and with a 5-shot cylinder it's not bulky at all. As for leather holsters, the Disantis, Galco and Bianchi are my choice.

One word of note, the Rugers seem to have pretty stiff triggers. They may smooth out over time, but they're a handful (to me anyway) at first. If I were to get one, I'd have a trigger/action job done to shorten the pull for my long fingers, and just lighten it up a bit. I don't like handguns that you have to position in your hand just right in order to fire them; I have a big problem with long DA triggers, and most smaller revolvers seem to have them. For handling out of the box, I much prefer some of the bigger S&W's. My 686 is smooth as glass and has a very light pull compared to the Ruger.

Whatever handgun you choose, make sure it fits you well and can be handled easily. The last thing you want is to be fumbling for a grip when you need to get a shot off, or finding you've pulled the trigger back as far as your hand will allow and the gun needs a little more to fire.

Good luck!
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

:D I hope you're a big guy.  The SP101 is a lot of gun to pack all the time and hide during the hot Texas summers when you want to go out wearing just a T-shirt.  Before you buy take a look at the S&W model 60.  Its a small .357 that can easily be slipped into your pocket.

I carry the Smith on occassion, but prefer something a little bigger when I can carry and safely conceal the gun.

I own a SP101 in 3 1/16" bbl. I also have a GP-100 in 6". Both are tough as nails. The GP frame is larger than the SP. If it were me, I'd go with the SP101. A nice revolver that I just don't think someone can wear out.
