otter glands for lure?
« on: December 10, 2004, 02:39:10 PM »
Just wondering if you can save anything on an otter and use it in lure formulations such as using beaver castor - I have had good luck catching a few otter and want to use all I can from them if possible.

Mo, welcome to Graybeards.
You can save the otter glands and use them as an attractant, but I catch sevaral otter each year at my castor mound sets.Otter like all animals ,gravitate to beaver castor.
 Good luck, Tom

I agree with yottey, they will bring out curiosity in the canines but I don't believe any of us have enough knowledge and understanding about otter to know for sure what message otter glands in an otter lure are transmitting to an otter.  Ace

Thanks for the info on the glands,  I just caught my 9th otter this morning using blind sets on crossovers off one levee - around here we can catch a limit of 20 and I am now going to shoot for that - before this year I had only caught one in my 7 years of trapping.

My suggestion is to get to know the animal you want to catch - seriously.  Look for tracks and I concentrate on fresh scat piles which around here look greenish with fish scales and crawdead parts in it - also another field observation  - look for green patches of grassy crossings  - I personally believe the otters might be attracted to them this time of year when most everything else is brown.  With any animal I would rather set them blind initially and then swithch to bait and lure later.  As of yet - sorry Asa but I have not used any lure, just trail sets but am about ready to switch to some lure and footholds before the ice locks up.
