Yamaha Grizzly & Kodiak Problem.....HELP!!
« on: December 11, 2004, 06:30:35 AM »
You guys ever see the look of a confused dog? You know, the tilted head, deer in headlights look. Thats what I got when I told the service guys my problem. On bothe my grizzly and my friends kodiak, when you first start it, it runs okay. After about 30 seconds. the reverse light starts to blink, and it begins to run real bad, or stall. The service manager didn't even know what it was. Anyone ever have this problem?? Thanks.

don't both of those have a CDI?  Have those been altered in any way?  That would be my first guess if you are having electrical problems, lights coming on and blinking and then they won't run properly.

Bothe machine are as they come from the factory. The Grizz is '05 and Kodiak '03. Pretty close to same miles and hours on bothe, and the problem started at almost the same time. Hmmmm.

hi, i would check and clean all grounds and then get a tube of dielectric grease and take apart all wire connectors and clean them and grease them. they get alot of gunk in them, and corrode from moisture. good luck

Sorry it took me so long...When the reverse light starts flashing that means the throttle is too high....it's flashing to tell you that you should not shift into gear...Turn the throttle down a little and try again....

If that is the case, then why doesn't it flash when you rev the engine in park? Also, while the reverse light is blinking, it runs like total crap. Almost as if the choke lever is all the way on, and the gas lever pushed all the way. But, the very second the light stops blinking, it runs like nothing ever happened. I know I posted this a long time ago, but it's been that long, and my dealer still looks at me stupid, with no clue. Not even the regional Yamaha service rep has even heard of it (service manager spoke to him the other day). I'm still scratching my head..........grrrrrrrr.

Is this a dumb question?

Have your service guys actually taken a look at it or have you just asked them what is going on?  It sounds like you have not actually taken it into them to work on.

In 02 the Yamaha Raptor had a built in tattle tail in the cdi.  If the engine was revved beyond the limiter the back up lite flashed and the cdi had to be reset by leaving it unplugged for a period of time.  Could be the Grizzly and Kodiak have a similar system.  Buddy of mine has a kodiak here today but we aren't going to over rev the thing to test it for you.

Yes I have. And, of course as luck would have it, when we took them (grizz twice kodiak once) they ran flawlessly. I think they know when they are at the dealer. That over-rev idea is interesting old syko. When it did that, did it run crappy? Also,  if it was plugged into a diagnostic system, would it recognize it? The Kodiak just came from the dealer the other day and they said it was fine. When it came home, it did it again :x .

Don't know about the diagnostic equipment but just unplug the cdi and let it set over night.  Apply a generous amount of dielectric silicone to the connecters and plug it back up in the morning.  The dielectric is important!  Use it on all plugin connections but make sure to use it on ignition and fuel control connecters.  Also check for rust or corrosion in the connecters and eliminate it before reinstalling.

Like I said, I don't know if this pertains to the Kodiak and Grizzly or not but know for a fact how it worked on the Rappy I had.

After reading Azshooter's link it makes a guy wonder about the need for a pull starter.  What good is it if the thing won't run right even if you do get it started that way due to a dead battery?

Glad to see the link though.  It's something I'll remember for the future.

A few months ago, i turned my Grizzly off, and when i came back to it, the batt. was too weak to roll the motor over.  I was pretty glad to have that recoil starter!!!  It would have been a LONG walk back had i not been able to start it manually.

It needed a new batt., and once i installed one, it's once again running perfectly.

I have an 04 Kodiak and I tested it in park by revving up the engine and yes, the reverse light began to blink. However, the engine still ran smoothly and I had no problem shifting into gear, so I am no help. Sorry
