45-70 vs 45-90
« on: January 30, 2003, 03:14:16 AM »
Greetings

I found this on another board.... I'm sure how true it is.

Originally, the 45-90 had a different twist rate than the 45-70, and was designed to lauch lighter bullets faster than the 45-70...in two originals, the 45-70 would shoot 500 grainers much better and much further than a 45-90, albeit a rainbow trajectory. Each caliber had a somewhat different objective back in the day...modern repro's can give you whatever twist you want, but stick with the 45-70 and standard twist.

First off he does not say from where the information came from, but I was just curious as to the truth in this.

Thanks
Jon

Jon,

I believe that's true to some extent, the 45-90 Winchester was an express type cartridge, the 45-2.4" Sharps was/is a long range cartridge. The books I have list the 2.4" Sharps as having a 1-18" Twist, same as as 45-70. I think, (not sure, I'm away from my books right now) that the 45-90Win has a faster twist suitable for lighter bullets.

Thanks Chuck, I forgot about the Winchester and being suited for lighter bullets.  Now it makes sense.

But the poster of that comment made it sound as though ALL 45-90's were created the same at the time of their making.  NOT SO

"Cartridges of the World" discusses this and indicates the 45-90 using a 300 gr bullet in an express load around 2200 fps and designed for the 1886 Winchester so was not competing against the big single shots in the long range market.  I agree that you can now probably get most any twist you want if a 45-90 is your choice.

I was at the shooting range recently and someone was shooting a 45-90 with a 300 grain bullet.  He had a crony and it tapped out at 2,160 fps, so that 2,200 fps statement sounds pretty darn close.

What load was he using to get 2200?

How far out will a 300 grain stay stable out of a 1-18 twist?

How fast can you push a 300 grain with a 45-100 and 90 gr 2F?

Empty heads need answers.

I don't believe it is remotely possible to attain that kind of FPS with black powder.

More than likely that was a smokeless load.      :bye:
