How much does wind effect a shot?
« on: December 11, 2004, 02:10:35 PM »
I went out today to try some 777 and 225 grain powerbelts in my Omega .45. The wind was blowing anywhere between 10-20 mph left to right.  I had sighted in the gun a couple of weeks ago at 100 yards but I was using 195 grain Powerbelts with 3 pyrodex pellets and I wasn't getting real good groups.  Today I was using 3 -  50 grain 777 pellets and the 225 aerotip powerbelt.   At 50 yards I was getting my shots to hit about 1/2 inch to the right of dead center.  At 100 yards I was 3 inches to the right of dead center.   Well, I adjusted my scope to hit dead on at 100 yards but then I was about 2-3 inches to the left at 50 yards.  I know the wind had to be playing tricks with the shot but what I want to know is how much?  Most of the shots I will have will be very close, 50 yards or less, but its nice to know where I'm hitting at 100 yards.  I guess I might just have to go out and try again when the wind is less.

Enough that I wouldn't want to sight in when the wind is blowing very much!

That is about right for wind drift, though it will vary some depending upon the bullet and muzzle velocity.  It is good to know exactly what your drift is at ranges you will be shooting at.  Personally I shoot high BC bullets at high velocity, so I never worry about it if I think the shot is under 100 yards.  Beyond that I start compensating.
I have found ballistics software invaluable in helping eliminate wind error in shots.  Once I had my velocity and trajectories down, I used this data to get estimated wind drifts from the software.  Then I shot under varying crosswinds to verify that they were correct...they turned out very close.
I have a laminated reference chart taped to my stock with 5mph and 10mph wind drifts on it out as far as I plan on taking a shot.  The more wind, the shorter the shot I limit myself to...an estimate is still just an estimate, and at long ranges you can be off by enough to ruin the shot.
Some of the long range rifle shooters estimate amazingly well...I'm not quite that good so I stay where I'm comfortable.

I've never posted a picture on here so I'd have to figure out how.  There's nothing remarkable about a 3"X3" piece of laminated paper with three columns of numbers (drop, 5mph drift, and 10mph drift) scotch-taped to the left side of my stock though.
Why exactly do you want to see it?

Try this instead (remove quotation marks):

The link you posted is not the image link, but the page the image is on. I noticed that it does give you the actual image link.

Wolfhound,
THanks for the tip.  I think I tried that but it didn't seem to work so I edited...I'll have to practice some more ;)

Jeff,
No ill will.  Just unsure of your motivations from your post.  I try not to BS when  it deals with hurling chunks of lead downrange at 2000 fps at living creatures...though the stories that result may receive a dab of BS as time passes ;)  I put a LOT of work into this gun over the past year.  You cannot see the aluminum pillar and bedding job I did from the photo.

Deputy,
I have mixed feelings about the In-liner.  The optical quality seems decent, at least as good as a Bushnell.  Good enough I can't really tell the difference from anything else.  The cam system for range compensation is a great idea, but the number of variables in ML shooting make it not as good as it probably is on a CF rifle where bullets/trajectories are much more standardized.
They say to set the cam for 100-300 yards, but the load shoots too flat to do this.  They reference the XTP and the manual, but I don't think I'd advise shooting a deer with an XTP at 300 yards!!  Instead I set it up for 200-400 yards using 200 and 300 to set the first two cam set points.  The cam adjusts more or less perfectly from 200 to about 330 yards.  Beyond 330 I have to start adding some additional "lift" since the bullet starts dropping faster than the cam compensates.  At 400 yards I have to hold 10 inches high.  All in all a decent scope, though next time I might go with a target knob scope.  Having the back of the scope move up and down means the cheek weld must be different at longer ranges since the center of the tube will be higher.

Man....the gun you describe is EXACTLY what I was going to build when my finances come through in a year or so.  The only difference being a 1-10 or 1-12 twist .375 barrel and custom .375-.338 sabots like we mentioned.
