How much noise does a yote in the woods make?
« on: December 12, 2004, 02:51:53 AM »
I was out calling this morning in an area (~1400 acres) where people have seen coyotes before.  It's really thick woods and there's a bayou running along the edge of it for a ways.  Looking through the thick parts, you'd be lucky to see any movement past 15 yards.

It was around 6:30, with first light just hitting the horizon at 6:10.  I found a nice spot about 20 feet up from the waterline and started making an attempt at a dying rabbit with a Tally Ho caller.

Nothing for a while, and then I heard footsteps in the leaves.  Then silence, then more footsteps.  Man this thing sounded BIG!

Then more silence, AND THEN . . .

This tiny little punk ass squirrel pops out from behind a tree.  I mean this guy was TINY.  The smallest one I've ever seen.

So I watched him dig around in the leaves for a while and after about 20 minutes of calling on/off I got up and left.

Now,I'm curious, does a coyote walking in the woods make any sound, or are they really good at being quiet, even with  leaves on the ground?

I have yet to see one in real life.  This was my second attempt at calling.  I think I need to listen to some recordings of people who know what they are doing and just spend some more time out there.

Thanks!

-jacob

Oh, they wont make much noise, unless perhpas you get one running in.

find an reasonably clear opening, and place a motion decoy.  that would have to be the best bet.  as for my advice however, I am a lousy yote hunter and have never got one. But not for lack of trying.  :)

It really depends on how that particular yote chooses to respond. Sometimes they come in at nearly a full run, and in that case, of course they sound like a dog running through the leaves and brush. On the other hand, sometimes they'll sneak in very cautiously and are just about as quiet as a deer trying to sneak in; and of course those kind often spot you before you know they're there.
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Very Good Advice So far.
You have to count on the yote being very cautious. Pretend like you have a stiff neck as any quick movement on your part will give you away.
Look at nothing in particular but everything in general making full use of your periprial vision. You will be suprised at how quickly you can pickup movement.
