APP Powder- CB Pistols
« on: December 12, 2004, 04:40:25 AM »
Anyone use it in their CB PIstols? I tried it ,NMA Remmies, works great no binding up after multiple shots. My Remmies like 25grns of APP(3ffg), can shoot at least 30-40 rounds no problems. Plenty of smoke, cleans as easy as T-7. Best part is the price,13.95 a pound ! Not as powerful as T-7, but the groups seem to be as good. Maybe a little easier on these revolvers.? I shoot CAS as well, and have found it works very well (shot eight stages no cleaning). Plain water clean up, easier than smokeless. I only lube the cylinder pin, back of cylinder where hand engages, and the bolt with Bore Butter. APP says no lube, so I dont put anything in cylinders or barrell. Just curious if anyone else has had good success with this powder? Sincerely Montanadan............

OK montanadan, A new BP substitute called APP? You got my curiosity up. Lots of smoke, as clean as 777, accurate? You got my attention. Less energetic than 777 ? You got my Walker repro's attention. $7 to $10 a pound cheaper than 777 ? You got my UNDIVIDED attention. More info, please, and where do you get it !!   Cowpox

(Cowpox-I have a few CB revolvers, I now use APP in all of them(3ffg only). I live in central WYO, and bought it locally. I just tried one pound, went back and bought all they had. If you load it in cartridges make sure you rinse the cartridges in dish soap and water. I mean REAL SOON! The down side it is hard on brass. When APP said use no lube, they mean it. It hates oil of any kind and will contaminate the powder charge. I would stay with 3ffg for CB pistols and percussion rifles, does not work at all in flints without priming main charge with 4 ffg. I use no.10 Remington caps on the CB with charges up to 35 grns. After that it seems to like hotter cap,(otherwise sounds like a bad flint.) I have been Playing with APP for about 2 years now, I shoot it my .45 cal Pedesoli (percussion) shoots as good as Goex without the mess. Plain water will dissolve the powder fired or not. Wyoming does not normally have real high humidity,so this is not a problem out here. APP has their own web site, you may want to check it out. When I load it cartridges I use no LUBE at all. Make sur you barrel and cylinders are oil free. If you feel you must lube, bore butter on the first ball only. Hope this helps ...Montanadan(APP makes its own lube)

In my previous post about loading APP in cartridges- Immerse the brass after it has been fired, and ejected from the gun-rifle. Real soon! I carry half gallon milk jug 2 squirts of dishsoap and water, I put my brass in this ASAP. Those of you with brass framed revolvers might want to keep a damp rag(or a little mister-for plants) to keep your brass real shiny. I do not use wads or anything else.Clean up with plain water, dry, and a light coat of ballistol. You folks back east with high humidity, I would not use this for hunting, or leave rifles loaded for long periods of time, APP is very hygroscopic(it asorbs moisture). When I get home from shooting I always empty my flask and horn back into the original container. APP once fired is non corrisive no more than smokeless, but I do clean my firearms. I have found APP to be similiar to Pyrodex in power, however over compression of APP will get real exciting in a hurry. It gets very erratic. This powder will out smoke anything on the planet,so if you love smoke,be ready. Respectfully   Montanadan

Same here, Thanks montanadan, I would mainly use it in cap and ball revolvers. especially that Walker. I don't care for all the racket, and REAL recoil 777 produces in that old girl. There really isn't enough bullet ram to reduce charges without resorting to CocoWheats, and I don't care to bake a batch of cookies while shooting. Gonna' try to find some APP around here, and give it a try. Thanks again for the info.  Cowpox

Just an afterthough on the hangfire situation. I have only one flint lock. A little .32 , and unless I put a toothpick in the touch hole while loading, there is a noticable time lag on ignition. I wonder if using a nipple pick on the cap and ball before capping would take care of the slow ignition ? That should let the spark into the charge without having it burn like a fuse in the spark passage. Worth a try.  Cowpox

I was shooting 30 grains of American Pioneer in by brass remmy. I thought it seemed hotter than fffg black. Mabey I was compressing it too much? I was using wads and roundballs. Mabey I was used to using really dead old black powder.
