I was walking out of the woods today after the morning shoot and I met another hunter with some ducks in a bag. He asked if I could help ID a duck for him. He showed me a medium-sized duck, about the size of a Wood Duck, and the body and feathers even looked a little like a Wood Duck. But he had a black head with a black mohawk, webed feet, and a fish-eater bill (thin and pointed). On each side of his head he had big white patches that went up into the mohawk.
At first glance I thought it was a Bufflehead, but having never seen a real one (that wasn't in a book) I couldn't be sure. He thought it was a Hooded Merganser, but I've never seen one of them either.
Does anyone know what kind of duck that was?
