Is a dangerous thing to have.....

Spent some time this evening over on the Winchester site looking over their published ballistics data. My mouth has been watering for a 38-55 barrel, but while the frame is in the shop I thought I might get one of those hot rod hyper velocity cartridges I have read so much about in these later years. I've had a 30-06 in past and have a 30-30 Handi, not much desire for another 30. But i'm intrigued by either a 25-06 or a 7-08. The 25 looks really flat shootin. Which would you choose and why?

JPH;

I've got two 7mm-08's but none of them in a Handi.
Been using the Rem. Model 7FS since 1989. Its brought down a lot of deer over the years. I've only used the 120 gr bullets. They seem to work best for the deer we have in the southeast. And man do they drop quick. You do your part by putting the bullet in the boiler room, and you wont be tracking them very far or maybe none at all. They go down that quick.
The other rifle I aquired, was this year, is a Ruger Compact SS Mod. 77 MKII with a 16-1/4" barrel. Although I did not need the rifle, my father came over right before deer season to get his rifle, the Ruger. Well I told him to try my Marlin 1894 in 41mag. He said he had been wanting that rifle since I bought it last year. He did not like a scope and a bolt action for the area he was hunting. He wanted my lever action. He said would I trade it to him even. It had a Sightron 2.5X8X42mm scope on it I had bought him for his birthday last year.
Well, that Marlin was my favorite rifle. But since he is my dad I traded with him.
Both rifles shoot MOA using IMR-4064 powder.
Soooo..... yea, go with the 7mm-08.

I choose...well...several to fill the urge...I'm a Handiholic what would you expect me to say

I got a 308 Bull barreled ordered...I got a 270 barrel on it's way to me...I have a sweet shooting 25-06...and I want a 280 to go with it...that fills my mid-bore calibers...all of them flat shooting...all of them can work for whatever I need ...I had a 257 Weatherby a little while back...it was ok...but truth be told...I like my 25-06 a-lot more...it's every bit as accurate...it's lighter..kicks less...not as loud...and ammo is a-lot less...and it really doesn't lack in the trajectory department...same can be said for the 280...or the 270...or the 308...

I might as well fill the caliber selection up and get them all...that would be the best solution...you probably should too...

The 7mm-08 and the 25-06 can't really be compared they are simply two different animals. Both will do things better under certain conditions.

The 25-06 is perhaps one of the flattest shooting standard calibers. I am very fond of the 25 bore. The 25-06 cartridge has not the best shape for handloading, but you still can get 8-10 reloads from a case.

I am not a Handiholic the 25-06 H&R Ultra did not live up to what I had expected. But that is besides the point, many others had better luck with the 25-06 H&R. Besides you can send it back if it gives trouble.

One other problem I had was that I have a 25-06 Ruger#1 that will shoot rings around of some of the best shooting hunting rifles. In all honesty the H&R is not comparable with that rifle.

You go  ahead and get a 25-06 and loaded up with the 100gr TSX-Barnes and Reloder 22 and I assure you will be very pleased. It will smash through a boar's shoulder or head and drop him in his tracks

Forget about the 7mm-08 even though it is one of the best deer rifles, but it is not a 25-06 or a 257Wby these two are kiss'n cous'ns.

Ruger#1
Standard Moly plated 100gr Hornady Reloader 22 3380 ft

same load same powder same primer

100gr Barnes TSX (three grooves in bullet) Moly plated 3440ft.

All bullets loaded .010" into the lands. My normal seating depth. The bullet is stopped by the lands at this point. The 100gr Hornady like .015" into the lands.

I tried only three 100gr TSX bullets in the Ultra during a load test session, and they did just as poor as the rest of the loads, not the fault of the bullets. Because of the long throat in the Ultra I used 117gr bullets to reach the lands. After some considerable tinkering with the rifle I got the 117gr bullets to shoot pretty good.

In the 25 Hunter and the 25-06 I consider the 100gr bullets optimum for my use. If I would go after some big stuff the 115gr TSX flat base bullets should be the cats meow. It makes me think that this bullet maybe very well suited for the H&R Ultra  25-06 ????

I don't know Fred...but I'll pick up a box of them and a pound of Reloader-22 and give them a try...I got a brand new set of 25-06 RCBS dies given to me the other day where I bought my rifle...and I'm itchin to wring it out...I just got my steel forearm spacer for my new custom stocks...and have to finish the forearm and get it glass  bedded...first...now that my deer season is over...I can take the laminated stocks off of it and move  them over to my 308..&..270 barrels...

Thats the only way to find out, every gun acts different to bullets and loads. Barnes makes only very few flat base bullets and 115gr is one of them. With the lesser density the FB makes sense. Otherwise they would perhaps need more twist then the common 1-10 for the 25 bore.

The Barnes TSX bullets are a bit different than other bullets. They won't have the pressure of other bullets with the same bullet weight and powder charge. The advise I got for loading the TSX bullets was that they can be loaded 1-2 gr. higher than listed max loads, approaching that new limit, a .5 gr. at a time. Your better off to check with Barnes on that. They're good about e-mail questions. The TSX won't leave a lot of copper in your barrel either. I think the grooves must allow the bullets to wipe the bore clean. The bullets perform disproportionately to their weight, about the same as others will with another 20 gr. of bullet weight.
