H&R single shot w/ Mannlicher stock?
« on: December 14, 2004, 07:48:38 AM »
I came across one of these yesterday in a local shop. It was the first one I'd ever seen w/ the full mannlicher stock. It was chambered in .22 Hornet and had a blond colored stock. The gun looked like every other H&R and NEF break action single shot that I've ever seen, except I noticed the pistol grip section on this one looked much slimmer and form fitting to the action. It was unlike the current production ones I've seen lately that look very chunky and ill fitting where the pistol grip mates to the receiver.

Is this an unusual/rare gun? Or perhaps a custom stocked model? Any and all help is appreciated.

It is an original H&R model, called the Topper. Made before interchangeable barrels were commonplace. I have one in 30/30 (two actually - one is for sale - watch the classifieds) and had one years ago that was my first single shot centerfire.

The standard stocked ones are mildly rare (I made up that term) and the mannlicher stocks somewhat more rare.

I like my Topper because it is about a pound and a half lighter than my NEF 30/30 and I too like the slimness of the stock.

You might find out what the price is for the Hornet, and if you don't want it, let the folksl here know.. there are plenty of 'aholics on this forum.

Cheers

The first H & R gun I ever owned was a Topper in 30-30...and with the right handloads...it was simple awsome...1/2 groups with it were easy to come by...but in my haste to get a much faster shooting gun...I traded it off for a bolt action in the same caliber...bad mistake...it wasn't the Mannlicher stocked one...although I did try to get a forend for it just before I traded it...and the person I traded it to...still has it...and he's taken more deer and coyote's with it than I can count...it was a great gun...and I wouldn't mine having one again...especially if was a original Mannlicher stocked one in good shape...

My experience is pretty much the same MAC. (And I wanted the Mannlicher stock too)

I only bought my first Topper because it had the 20 ga barrel and it was cheap. I wanted the 20 ga to hunt grouse. I paid $85 for the pair in about 1988.

I had a 30/30 Mod 94 Win as my deer gun, and one day while I was sighting it in I decided to put the 30/30 barrel on the Topper and have a go shooting it as a rifle.

That durn thing impressed the heck out of me with its accuracy that day..with factory rounds! I pretty much never looked back from that point on.

In fact that's how I got into handloading. I figured the advantage of pointy bullets in the 30/30 was worth starting into something new. I bought a 30/30 Lee Loader ($9.99) and went from there.

I sold it to my brother-in-law one day in 1994 when he offered me way more than I paid for it - $200. I figured I'd be able to find another one to replace it, and I'd have some extra cash.. I did find another one - about three weeks ago!

Cheers

Sounds overpriced but may be worth it for the stock since they apparently are no longer available anywhere.

Thanks for the info, folks.  If the gun had been in a "deer" caliber it probably would have gone home with me.   At least in my hands, it pointed just like a good bird gun.  FWIW, this one was at Larry's Pistol & Pawn in Huntsville, AL.  If memory serves, the asking price was just a hair over $200 with cheap scope included.

That 30-30 mentioned above would have been ideal... :(

Just a thought, but the fluted barrels that have been spoken of, has anyone verified that that is what the "FL" in the listings means? I was wondering if it might indicate "full length" as in manllicher stock? This has been troubling me ever since the talk of fluted barrels came up, I think we are just surmising the "FL" indicates fluted, I hope not, I would like to get a fluted barrel but until we get some sort of verification from H&R arn't we just flying by the seat of our pants?...tell me I wrong, please, I would love to know for sure that factory fluted barrels are just around the corner....<><....
