Guess it's old news already? 7.62 X 39
« on: December 14, 2004, 04:37:00 PM »
I added a quote to the 2005 NEF/H&R Offerings thread, but I guess the news that they will offer the 7.62 X 39 as an accessory barrel is "old news" already. I spoke with Gordon at approx. 4 pm today, that's what he told me.

Did he happen to say if it was a .308 or .311 barrel?

I would imagine they would do it in .311.  Seems like it would be a liability problem in .308 with all the milsurp ammo around.
....make it count

I love the 7.62X39.  I have a barrel for my Encore and have greatly enjoyed it.  I think it would be fantastic to have one of these for a handi rifle.  Especially with a 150gr. bullet.  It would be perfect for a deer load out to 200 yds.

Looking at the ballistics, it is plainly a 100yd deer caliber, regardless of bullet weight. Max energy at the muzzle is ~1500ft/lb, 100yd energy is at 1000-1100ft/lbs, the accepted minimum for deer.

EDIT:   Unless you roll yer own, then 150yds would be the limit.

Reynolds, I'd rate the 7.62x39 as a 150 yard deer cartridge rather than a 200 yard, but that's a plenty in my area. You are absolutely right about the heavier bullets. I am pushing a 159 cast semi spitzer at 2200 fps or just past from a CZ 527 Carbine with an 18" barrel.  That's ahead of the .30-30 by they time it gets to 100 yards and a good bit ahead in both velocity and energy at 150.

I'm looking forward to the Handi. I'll get a complete rifle if I can because I already have too many barrels for my one SB-2 frame.

My guess is that they have introduced the 7.62x39 now because the new extractor solves the sticking problem. I'm told that can be a real problem with the lacquered steel case ammo.

Anyway, looks like we now have the answer to the perennial question of what to start new shooters on. The combination of dirt cheap practice ammo, good deer capability, and low recoil is gonna be a hard one to beat. Accuracy is just flat outstanding, too, at least in my rifle with handloads. Tolerable with the cheapie  ammo.

I wonder....if they put the extractor on the 308 instead of the ejector...if one could use the cheap surplus ammo for it as well with out the sticking case headache...none of the 308 barrels I've owned would eject the cheap stuff...even the Winchester white box stuff...

The only problem the extractor solves is not losing cases over your shoulder.  It will actually be weaker (unless they put a lot stronger spring in it) because it will be designed to NOT push the case out of the chamber too far.

I think we should have a selector to allow you to pick, extract at the range and eject to hunt.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Handi, you musta missed the last few posts on the extractor, it's not spring driven, it's mechanical.

Quote
After doing a better examination of the extractor on the new .204 ruger, the extractor is mechanical, not spring driven, if I try to hold the extractor in the closed position as I open the action, the extractor will over power my attempt to keep it from doing it's thing, extracting the case. So it is definetly an improvement over the old spring driven ejector IF you prefer an extractor to an ejector. This should be the end of the stuck case problem.

I called back today and asked. Gordon at customer service told me he had been trying to get that exact info since last week and does not have a definite answer at this time, but he did say he understands that it will be the "standard" dimensions for the 7.62 X 39. He said it should be available by the end of Jan. as an accessory barrel, he did not give a date it would be offered as a complete gun.
