Anyone else have a 256 Maximum?
« on: December 15, 2004, 01:39:12 PM »
I just purchased a 12" E. Authur Brown Contender barrel in 256 Maximum to keep my 256 Win Mag barrels company. Anyone have loading data that they would be willing to share?

Thanks!

John,
I use to have a Bullberry 15inch in this caliber.  It was so accurate I would shoot about a hundred rounds through it a setting and not let it cool.  I ended up degrading the accuracy and had it rebored to 7mm and chamber for the Waters round.
It is the most accurate barrel I have ever owned and wish I was smart enough to take better care of it.  Numerous 5 shot groups at 100 yards you could cover with a quarter.
Unfortunately I didn't keep the best records back then and don't have the exact load.  I do remember the following though.  I only used the 75gr hp by Hornady and Sierra.  They grouped identical in this gun.
Best load was right around 23grs of H322 and I remember it didn't vary much with a grain more or less.  I would start around 22grs.  I also remember using H335, AA2230, and AA2460 with no real change in groups with these bullets.  H335 just has more flash and blast.  It was a very easy cartridge to load for but I seem to remember H322 gave me the best velocity for pressure.  I also remember starting loads for the 223 with a 50gr bullet out of the Sierra 3rd edition manual were a great starting point as they never got me in trouble.  I can't verify any other manuals as that was the only one I used at the time.
Hope this gets you started.
Scott.

John,
I actually meant most groups could be covered with a dime and if it took a quarter they were considered bad groups for the barrel.  This was with a Burris 4X handgun scope and young eyes.

Thanks 357Mag-guy!

I have a pair of 10" 256 Win Mag Bull barrels, and barrel #1 shoots 75 gr. V-max bullets pushed by 14 gr. of H4227 into little bitty groups like your 256 Max. I haven't even shot barrel #2, because #1 shoots so well. I haven't measured the twist on the barrel I purchased, but I hope it tighter than the 1/14 found on most 256 WM so I can shoot pointed bullets heaver than 75 grains.

Hey John,
I also have two 256WinMag barrels and I am just starting to work up loads.  One is the old original octagon barrel and the other is a 12inch Bullberry custom job.  Any other good loads you have would be greatly appreciated.  I just shoot the 75gr bullets because I only plan on using these barrels on varmints.
I'm going to try your load but I only have IMR4227 on hand so I will give that a try.  What primers do you use?
Most new .25cal barrels are 1in10 twist from the custom makers.
I remember shooting my 256Max over a chrony a couple of times and it seems my loads were going a little over 2600fps from a 15inch barrel.  You will probably lose about 100fps or so with the 12inch barrel.
Thanks,
Scott.

I use formed Starline 357 Mag brass in my 256 WM. I'd be surprised if you saw much difference between IMR and H4227. I've tried a several different primers in the 256, Rem 7 1/2, 6 1/2, and Fed 100 all seem to work pretty well.

I measured the twist in my 256 MAX barrel last night and it's 1/10.
