Why rope?

Most field carriages seem to have a length of rope available on the tailpiece.  Other than just nice to have handy, did this rope have any specific purpose?

E.D.,

I went through the Complete cannoner and saw that they use the rope or as they call it the prolong for dismounting the barrel and righting overturned guns.

I have aslo seen pictures of guns on rail cars and the rope was used with the chain plates to tie the wheels.

The rope was also used when crossing swampy ground. The horses could be well ahead of the gun on solid ground to pull the cannon thru the swamp

The  prolong  rope  also used to fire in retreat  toggle to cannon dragging on ground  and  looped to limber  pulled and shootable.
