Question for GB on 460 S&W
« on: December 16, 2004, 03:32:11 AM »
Graybeard:

The only potential thing of value with this cartridge that I can see will depend entirely on an innovative bullet technology that permits us to use lighter bullets to get the same penetration as we get with heavier bullets.  Is that part of the formula for this cartrige?

The other stuff I read is just hype. Of course a 200 grain bullet going 2300fps is going to give "surprisingly" light recoil when it's shot from a ported six pound revolver or a long barrelled and scoped Encore pistol.

Does this round have any potential for use in conventionally sized guns? or does it depend on supersized guns like the X frame or big single shots?

So far it just looks like a "45-70 WSM", to coin a phrase.

Personally I see absolutely no need or merit for the new cartridge. I told ya up front you'd never see me with one. It flies in the face of all we know about making straight wall handgun rounds more effective. If you want more killing power you use a fatter and heavier bullet, not more velocity.

It is S&W's attempt to take away some of the sales of the guns of other manufacturers who sell .454 Casull chambered revolvers. It fits the new X gun platform like the .500 S&W and so most likely Taurus will chamber it in their RB since they've expanded it to work with the .500 S&W. SSK and perhaps others will chamber the Encore for it but to what end I'm honestly not sure. It will do nothing the .45-70 and/or .450 Marlin already chambered in the Encore won't do as well or better.

Light weight big bore bullets are just plain DUMB.

While I agree with GB on this issue, not all experts do.  Lee Jurras made a pretty good living loading 180-grain .44 Mag ammo (among a lot of other SuperVel stuff) , and he shot a LOT of game with that load.  His secret was to use a non-expanding jacketed bullet to gain penetration.  Again, not my cup of tea, but another valid viewpoint.  Late 19th century hunters gravitated to Express cartridges using much lighter than normal bullets to gain velocity and killingpower, this in calibers up to .450" and more.

Graybeard,

From everything that I have seen, this 460 S&W w/ light bullet concept is as worthless as teets on a boar.

Might make an interesting gun for shooting silhouette or for a guy that "has to" hunt with a revolver...

I don't know maybe I am weird when I set up a hunting handgun.

I look at the distance of shots.
I look at the size of the animal.
I look at the side issues like "dangerous game" or must it be "dropped" because or terrain or vegetation restrictions.

Then I pick a cartridge...

Then I pick a platform for the cartridge...

First, I don't think that I would ever pick a 460 S&W with 200 grain bullets for a flat shooting rig on light game.

Let alone pick a revolver for a long range rig on light game.

My thoughts exactly Spyro. I just really see no practical real world use for it. I believe it's ONLY reason for existence is that S&W build that new platform just for the 500 S&W and now they wanna take advantage of it with a new cartridge with their own name.

If ya wanna use a handgun for long range get a specialty gun. If you want a revolver get one matched to game to be hunted but accept the range limitation of a revolver and be done with it.

Well put Graybeard!  We know that big and heavy with moderate speed gets the job done.  (Wow, kind of like US!)  This may evolve into a 400 gr bullet pusher, it does have the powder capacity.  But I agree with you.  The way this is marketed, I just don't see the point.  But you also know that there will be some that just have to have it, because it is new and different.  44 Man

Just my opinion,  but I welcome the new round.  I'm a big fan of the .45 caliber family.  I have .45acp, 45 LC, 45-70, .45cal muzzleloader.  Hopefully a 454 casull someday too..   Or I'll just skip the Casull and get the 460 S&W, then shoot the 454 round in it.

The FA .454 using the FA 260 gr jacked hardcast bullet cranks out just over 2000fps---estimate the same type of bullet at 200 gr and what would you get?---maybe another 200fps? Would we find better penetration or terminal performance? Sounds like S&W needs another marketing trick for their huge revolver---nothing wrong with that, but us FA owners already have the platform to do the same thing---just sell us the bullet----but then WHY would we want it????      pg
