I have inherited my granddad's 12gauge SxS Stevens 311.  I don't know what year the gun was made in, but it was bought before 1965.  Does anyone know if this gun can safely take the new steel shots?

The Stevens model 311 was made from 1931-89.  If you cannot positively identify the age I would never chance using steel shot in yours.  I know my father's Springfield was made in the mid 30's and would never use anything but lead or hevishot in these barrels.

Yup, steel shot in thin barrels on older doubles is a big no-no. Go with bismuth.
