replacing a tube magazine
« on: December 17, 2004, 05:10:00 AM »
Hi all,
I have an old Stevens 66C bolt action rimfire that is missing the tube magazine. I can get an inner magazine tube from egunparts but no luck on the outer tube. Could I make this outer tube on my own, assuming I could get the right size (diameter) tube? Could I extrapolate the length of the outer tube from the inner tube? What would be the best method for attaching the tube to the receiver?
Thanks for your help. I'd really like to get this old gun shooting again.
Jeff

Brownells carries outer magazine tubes of differing sizes.  The out tube has to be long enough so the follower reaches to the end to push all ammo nito the shell guide.  The outer tube is usually pressed or pinned in place.. sometimes by a thru pin in one of the magazine holders hung beneath the barrel. They may also be simply pressed into the receiver or feed guide.  It is not easy to cut the inner tube retension slot in the out tube wall, neither is the shell shaped cutout where ammo is fed to the magazine.  It would be best if you could find an original or one that will work.  Perhaps someone know's if there are any parts interchangeability with other Savage 22 rifles.  Try JackFirst and some of the other parts houses first...
