25-06 Handi arrives
« on: December 17, 2004, 12:02:25 PM »
I picked up a 25-06 NEF Handi Rifle of of Gun Broker. I had a little problem in the transfer with a stupid dealer but my new toy has arrived.
Overall I was impressed with the fit and finish on the rifle. The trigger is very light and crisp, as good as most off the rack bolt guns or better. The barrel lock up seems very solid and positive with no barrel/action gap visible even using a high powered Streamlight and no barrel wobble noted.
I took the rifle home and cleaned the barrel completely. True to the description on Gun broker the barrel seemed to have more factory grease and dirt than powder fouling and copper. As a matter of fact no copper fouling was detected at all so I doubt it was shot much if at all.
I took the scope mount rail off and cleaned the screw holes and barrel surface. Then I bedded the rail to the barrel surface with JB Bond using spray Pam as a release agent. Then I mounted a old Leupold 3.5x10 Vari X III with medium Weaver rings.
I am looking forward to the first trip to the range to see how it will perform. I am hoping for accuracy of 1 to 1.5 MOA with my handloads or Hornady Custom 117 grain ammo and reasonably reliable ejection.
Keep you finger's crossed it will do well

Good luck with the gun

Be careful with using Pam as a release agent as I have heard of cases where it doesn't work too well. I use shoe polish whenever I bed a rifle. It has worked great for me so far. I was able to get my 17HMR to shoot 1/2" 100 yard groups after I bedded it

My 25 will put them under an inch at 100y now. A little load development got me there.

Cool another 25-06 owner...you might want to try some Winchester Supreme 115 Ballistic Silver Tips and see how they do...they worked great out of mine...

Congrats on the new rifle...and I hope it shoots great for you... :D
