Author Topic: FINALLY a load that shoots in my .223 bull barrel (Read 594 times)

After several months of playing around with my bull barrel 223 Handi, I finally found a load that will deliver 3/4" or better groups at 100 yds consistantly. I thought I would share it in the event others may have been as frustrated as I was.
I'm using a Winchester 46gr JHP bullet that I get from Midway. It has the ojive very close to the tip of the bullet, and it does reach the lands even though the overall length is short. I loaded the bullet into the case to where it touched the lands, then lowered my seating die plug 1/2 turn.
I'm using 26grains of WC846 and CCI mag primers. This load outshoots any other that I have tried in my Handi, and works well in several AR15s that I tried it in.

good going and i hope it shoots better and better as time goes on.if you ever decide to try something else i would try some blc2 powder and a Nosler 55gr BT.worked out very good for me.55grVMAX work good for me too

Plateshooter,
I would bet that your pet load is very close to the WW econo box 45 JHP stuff. I pulled a bullet and weighed the load, if I remember it was 26.5 grains of what looked like a simi ball powder. This WW45JHP stuff has been very accurate in my 223 UV. Wish my handloads would do as good. But I am not through working on it yet.

Congrat's on the good work you've done. It's a very fulfilling hobby, isn't it? Good for you. :wink:

Now go out and buy some more wc-846. Here in n.e. Ohio the price has gone up considerably at the shows!

We could get 4 lbs. a couple months ago for $35; but that's gone up by $10 in a few months! :shock: The guys must be putting it in their coffee!!! :eek: I'm guessing that after the hunting season it might come down a bit.....but not sure how much. It's one hell of a substitute for brand-new bl-c(2).

Thanks for all of the replies guys. SafetySherriff, we must be neighbors.
I get my powder at the Medina and Summit Co gunshows from Pat's reloading. Just paid $84.00 for 8lbs last week. From what I heard, the government no longer allows ammo components from pull downs to be sold, so I think as the supply dries up, the price will go up. I would like to find more WC852, but I don't see any of that around this area.
