Firewood and the DEC ???

A few years ago in my local paper there was an article about a program the DEC had letting people cut firewood on state land. I don't know if it was trees that were already down or what. I remember them saying it would cost around $10 for a face cord (4 ft. x 8 ft. x 18 in.) of wood and you cut and split it yourself, which I do anyways! Do any of you know anything about this type of program?

There is such a program, but it is rather complicated. I have never used it myself, but have heard others say "never again".
   I guess a lot of it is well opff the beaten path ...and you can't take your 4WD even on the beaten path.
    Actually, if you can connect with anyone who is a logger, you should be able to do better, by cutting up tops.
    Loggers want the logs(duh)..and the tops are by product, not as much heavy splitting either.
  Most of the expense (labor) in firewood is the cutting, splitting and hauling...
 
   Most times around here (southwestern NY) one can get tops to cut up for about $5 per face cord....and you can gently use the trail the loggers did...
 
    I would like to think that if you call a logger more than 35-40 miles from Syracuse, he should find something ....

For a couple of years I had a permit to cut down and falling trees on the barge canal land.  I used to cut over in Clay quite a bit.  Not great wood but it was free and close to home in Baldwinsville.
