topper 58 30/30
« on: December 19, 2004, 05:48:43 PM »
Hi everyone, I bought a topper 58 30/30 that at one time was part of a
20 ga. 30/30 combo. At the time of purchase they couldn't find the 20 ga barrel that came with it. What barrels can go on it? He said it was bought new in the 70's. if any one know what other barrels I can use, preferably rifle I would love to hear the choices. Thanks Brent

Brent, I too have one of the older pre-bancruptcy 30-30 barrels that I matched up to NEF shotgun receiver. To my knowledge barrels from that era will match up to todays shotgun receiver. They made a 22 Jet barrel and some others that I am not too sure about. Others here may want to elaborate on this. Numrich gun parts has in the past listed barrels for the 58-058-088 and others in their parts for older pre-bancruptcy Harrangton&Richardson rifles and shotguns. I purchased a forend from them for my set-up as the older style like you and I have, has thinner barrel profile than todays rifles do.

The company that now exists (h&r1871)will not fit barrels to your older frame, only frames made after a certain date that they manufactured after purchasing/starting up the new company.

Do a search on the web for Numrich gun parts and see what you come up with.............Chainsaw

Brent, I did the Numrich and it *appears* that they made many different shotgun as well as 22 Jet and Hornet-30-30-357 and 44mag- and 45-70 rifle barrels. They only have the shotgun barrels for sale at this time.

I think you could use any rifle barrel from that era that you could find, as well as shotgun barrels from todays manufacturer, but you would have to purchase from private parties as  todays companywill not fit ANY barrels to your receiver.............Chainsaw

Janitor, measure the length and width of the barrel lug and get back to us, you may be able to fit any of the newer 20 gauge barrels on that reciever, not to get you excited but that may be the case...Merry CHRISTmas....<><....

Does it have the snap on style forearm or the screw on style?

Ok folks here is the lug size... front has a "U" shape on side on front and a slight "V" in the rear shortest measurement U-V is 2.440, longest part measures 2.734, width is 0.624 & the width of the roller pin sticking out both sides of lug is .749 I don't know what else there is to measure... but it is a screw on forearm.  Thanks Brent

I saw a real nice straight-stocked H&R 30-30 a while back.  It was labeled "Mustang."  Still kickin myself in the butt for not buying it.  Asking price was $165 (at a gun show).

Janitor, I am not sure of the location of your "shortest" measurement but by those measurements I would say thay any newer barrel should be of the same style and design of your gun and should "fit".  I say that with a caveat because even though we on this board buy and sell barrels quite often there is often a slight bit of tweaking and fittingwe have to do to them. And it is possible to get a barrel that is just not compatible with your frame pr has been buggered up so badly by someone that is has become almost unusable or unsafe.  Also I would not use any the extreme high presuure barrels on you frame even if it was a perfect fit, different heat treatments (possibly). That said, pick up a shotgun barrel, a 45-70, 30-30 or .357, .44 Mag., .223 and have fun. Keep away from the 30-06's, .280, .308's etc. Stay around and ask questions, those of us here will be glad to help.  Merry ChRISTmas!!!....<><....

Janitor, I am not sure of the location of your "shortest" measurement.

On the lug if I laid the barrel on its side there was a "U" shaped groove on the bore end of the lug and on the back there was a "v" kind of groove next to the extractor. Did that help any? I measured the shortest possible way to measure the long way. I really haven't seen any others to know what part I should have to compare but I think I have the information I need. I think if I ever see one I will just have to measure and compare... I just wont be able to buy online without measuring and comparing. Thanks for the replies everyone. Brent

Congratulations on your new rifle.  I probably have your rifle's clone that I bought at a show this summer.  Since the factory won't rebarrel it I thought of  the shotgun barrel routine and then read on this board of the 30-30Ackley Improved.  If you do a search there is some good info on this simple rechambering and a smith that does the job.  Then I decided it was really a good deal when I started thinking of handloads with pointed bullets instead of factory loaded flat nosed ammo made for tubular magazine rile like the Model 94.  Probably never will get 308 performance from the 30-30 case but still new life for this rifle and ready available ammo in almost any Wally World, or country store that sells ammo.  If I run into any rifle barrels in the Denver area I will send you an email or post it on this site.
Congrats Again and Merry Christmas.

janitor, what I was trying to say was yes, any newer barrel is the same style and dimension and will "fit",  although the measurements may be off by a few thousandts, don't let that deter you, try someone elses shotgun barrel on it or just buy a cheap used shotgun barrel and we will talk you through the fitting process, as they say, "it ain't brain surgury"!!! After all, I can do it!!! a little mechanical ability or understanding is all thats needed for the basic stuff, and not to much of that....<><....
