Vernier Tang Sight....
« on: December 20, 2004, 01:42:40 PM »
I just recieved a T/C Vernier style Tang Sight and will be recieving the T/C Globe Front Sight to accompany it soon. My question is about the gradations on the side of the Tang Sight...does anyone know how many yards the gradations are supposed to be calibrated for? 25 yards? 50 yards? Just curious as it will be a while until I get to play around with it to find out. Thanks for any opinions in advance.

Maybe this will help:
http://www.riflesmith.com/sights.html
then scroll down a bit to "Reading Scale"

I have one of the T/C brand sights and each turn makes just under 3" of adjustment at 100 yards.  Each division mark is about 6.7 inches at 100 yards.  That's with a 28" barrel.

No offense intended, but when the main topic of this forum is a rifle that shoots 125 yards max, why does one need a sight graduated for anything more than that?

No offense taken, I didn't realize there was a range limit on this forum.

I thought the original question was about the relative size of the sight graduations.  If that question or my answer violates forum rules, would you please explain how?

Thanks,
Take care, have fun....

Don't mind me. Mama says I can't have a new Pedersoli for Christmas and I'm venting in all the wrong directions.

I would shoot at 25 yds, crank it 4 turns and shoot another group, then you know what one turn equals at 100 yds.

Just cuz you don't hunt at ranges beyond 125 yards doesn't mean you don't shoot at stuff farther away. Just for the fun of it. Pie tins at two hundred yards for one thing. The shiny aluminum ones---very satisfying when you hit one with a .62 caliber flintlock. Especially on a windy day. Sometimes farther away, too, if I'm feeling lucky. Anyhow, Merry Christmas, everybody!

Accuracy is the reason for it. I had a TC Hawken with the same sight set up and it was deadly at 200 yards. Not for large game mind you but for gophers in Montana, mamma was that fun.  I got a hit maybe 2 out of 6 tries. Visualize catching a beach ball at 900fps and you get the general idea. At 100 yards, on paper, you could cover 10 shots with your hand. Tons o' fun

mike-h, If I may be so bold to ask, where did you find the sight set up and was it expensive?

I think it would be a hoot to put the old front stuffer against the Sharps at say 300 yards.

thank you, sherppa

Those marks don't mean squat, they are for your own reference only. I put the same setup on both my .54 and .50 T/Cs.  I cut a small notch in the top of the adjusting screw so I can more easily count the threads up or down.
