Polishing stainless Encore
« on: December 20, 2004, 03:32:47 PM »
Anybody ever polish the satin stainless encore frame and barrel to get a bit more shine on it?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  My 12" 7mm-08 barrel finally arrived today and I was thinking of making it "mine" by polishing it up a bit.  Thanks.

Flitz Metal Polish will put a great shine on stainless. I have been using it for serveal years on my stainless barrels and frames.

Don't use steel wool, use a Scotch Brite pad instead.

Try using red rouge on a buffing wheel.  If you don't have a polishing unit, just slip a 6 inch cloth or felt wheel on your bench grinder.  I like the wheels that are 3/4 to 1 inch wide. After going over the gun with the red rouge, give it a good cleaning and then go to the Flitz Metal Polish on a clean wheel and go over it again.  Always keep your wheels separated, I keep mine in a plastic zip lock bag.  One for every type of polish I use and always clean the gun and polishing unit before putting a new wheel on and going to the next step.

If you use a polishing unit or bench grinder always keep the gun moving on the wheel and be cautious of keeping it on small pieces for to long, they get hot and you may end up with blisters on the fingers.  Another tip, I always tear the gun down to smallest point and polish each part individually.

Any suggestions on a gunsmith service that will polish a stainless encore and barrel for me.  I did it myself and it is just not quite the "perfect" polish job that I would like to have.  Thanks again for the help.

Zan, any gunsmith in your area who does rebluing work should be able to polish your Encore.  Ask to see a sample or two of his rebluing work.  If you like the polish he did before the reblue, then you should like the result of having him polish the stainless Encore.
