Heeeelp! Need advice...
« on: December 21, 2004, 10:23:06 AM »
I brought my brother and nephew to the range to shoot my Bisley 44.  My nephew is 6'7" tall and while shooting my Bisley, the recoil of the gun going off (due in part to his tall stature) slammed the the front sight into the hard overhead denting the very front of the sight and leaving a very slightly bent front sight with an impact bump that could be seen in the sight picture on the left hand side of the sight blade.  !
There was nothing else for me to do but get a fine file and try to taper the front sight and remove the burr on the left side.  It worked for function somewhat  but looks like crap.  Not to mention trying to cold blue the sight where it was filed which looks like crap as well!  I happen to love the Bisley and can't stand seeing the front sight as it is.
The parts breakdown in the Bisley instruction manual shows the front side blade as a separate part.  It appears to be welded in place with no pins.
Has anyone had a front sight replacement done on a Ruger SA, and how much did it cost???  My gunsmith said to send it back to Ruger for repair.
Any sugestions or advice? I want my Bisley back the way it looked from the factory, this is driving me nuts!

needs to be silver soldered back on and it will neccesitate the reblueing of the barrel. Best bet would be Ruger to do it.

Aside from the discussion of how to fix it lets talk about the HOW it happenned. Recoil was NOT the cause. Ain't no way a .44 magnum in free recoil is gonna go that high and hit that hard. He did what the cowboys in the movies do. He jerked that gun up in the air. That's why and how it went so high and hit so hard it damaged the sight.

Folks have no business shooting a gun they are that afraid of. Need to work their way up thru the recoil step by step until they are ready.

Hi Grey beard!  (My beard is actually gettin grey too).  You are absolutely correct.  My nephew (remember I said 6'7" tall ) did react with a kind of theatertricks during the initail first blast, a nominal 240 grain factory bullet from MAGTECH (el cheapo).  I am a 20 year veteran of the US Navy and am currently in the service of the US even now.  I realize your concern that the blast was not the cause.  It's true!  The whole thing is a bit embarising.  I just want to know how to fix the damn sight properly due to my over zealous entertainment of watching my nephew shoot the .44 mag.  His 'over reaction' was the true cause.  My brother and his son still has a real "kick" over this...no pun intended.  They did well after the initial adrenalin dump.
So Grey beard, what should I do?  I  respect your opinion, as well as others here.

Ruger Customer Service is the BEST!

I sent my Bisley .44 back to Ruger via my local gun shop.  I didn't want to fool with sending it myself with all the new shipping regs. Low and behold the gunshop calls me a month later (today) and said my Bisley was in.  Ruger replaced the front sight.  They also re-blued the ENTIRE piece.  Now get this...they didn't charge me a dime...AND they also paid for the return shipping!  I have always preferred Ruger firearms, but this totally blew me away.  This is what I call customer service!  The gunsmith said Ruger tops all the other firearms manufacturers when it comes to treating it's customers and I just wish more American companies would do the same.   As far as I am concerned...Ruger Rules!  This kind of treatment by a company is something I have never experienced.
How that for customer service?  :-D

PS:  My local gunsmith was amused on how the front sight was bent in the first place.  When it happened, I wasn't!
