Thanks TripleS, (not to be confused with Triple 7). Got to the Post Office a couple of hours ago, they said they are not sure if you will get it Friday because of the Holiday but you might. Got to run and check E-bay now...30-30,30-30,30-30....<><.... :)

I just use H&R NEF barrel. Sometimes the H&R products don't show up if I just use NEF.

Are they actually NEF barrels or some that someone else is making?

I though that at least on the SB2, you had to return the reciever to have the barrel fitted.  Has that problem been eliminated?

Question

When getting a new barrel does a forearm come with it or does the new barrel share the forearm with an existing one?

I watch E-Bay a lot. Right now there is one (1) NEF rifle barrel for a .223 and a .410 shotgun barrel. The 30-30 barrel is listed for a H&R Topper. Not real sure it would work on a NEF Handi frame.
I too thought the barrels needed to be fitted to the individual frame to be safe ect. Currently the 30-30 barrel listed as a Topper barrel is at $68.00 plus shipping. You can get a fitted barrel from the factory for just a little more.

They don't come with them per se but if the new barrel is signaifacntly larger, say 223 standard to bull barrel or 12 ga they want you to buy a new, correct size forend.

The bull barrel forend will fit almost all of them.

I don't consider $107 a little more, a .30-30 barrel from H&R is $82, plus the $15 fitting charge plus $10 to send your frame in, and another $10 to get the new barrel and your frame back from them makes the total cost of a new barrel from H&R $117 with shipping.

cost of new barrel
« Reply #11 on: December 22, 2004, 05:50:52 PM »
There's plusses and minusses either way.  Go with the factory installed barrel, you get a barrel that's guaranteed to fit.  If it don't they pay the freight to make it right.  The minusses are the time you're without the frame, the extra cost, and the fact that the current production barrels are not as sleek as the older toppers were (pretty sure about this).

With the ebay deal you get what is shipped, might/might not fit right.  This is a problem if you don't know how to MAKE it fit.  Seems like it shouldn't be too difficult, but hey, I ain't no gunsmith so whaddo I know?  If you could try it for fit first it would be an easier decision.   Me, I'd just save my coins and keep an eye out for another rifle you can find them for $100-175 used in this area.  Brand new for less than $200 at the discount houses.

I noticed the barrels for sale on ebay.  There is a survivor stock for sale also, which I kind of would like to have.  It is up to about $26 plus shipping.  Seems to be getting close to too much.  Does anyone know if these are still available from NEF?  I can't find them on their web site.  By the by, I am still looking for a barrel lug, if anyone knows of one, give me a shout.

That's part of the problem with the auction sites...people get on a buying frenzy and before you know it they are selling way over what they should normally be priced at...it's sorta like the the Tech Stocks before the market crash...you buy in hopes of selling higher than the actual worth...just be carefull...

Many folks here have been watching this for awhile now. I just looked at it again a few minutes ago!

That dang barrel is going for more than I'm asking for an entire gun - shipped!!

(Olay, just FYI here's where my ad is:)
http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=49265

If only I could get the whole gun on eBay!!!!

Maybe I should just part it out piece by piece on eBay and just keep the frame!

Problem is, I don't want to break it up, it is such a beauty of an old original H&R... I want it to have a good home! (such a softie when it comes to kittens, puppies, kids and old guns)

Sometimes I just shake my head in puzzlement at the antics of some of my beloved fellow men..  :?

I will not let this affect my enjoyment of Christmas!

I am going now to mull some apple cider and eat some of my wife's fresh baked shortbread, then wrap her TC Contender and put it under the tree.

Happy Christmas to all and Thank You Mr. Beard for this great website! :toast:
For many of us, you represent our Santa Claus at this time of year.

Cheers

Can't hardly belive the price the 30-30 is going for.H&R repaired my 44 but a 3006 barrel on it and shipped it back and billed me $107.00 and I know it fits. Maybe I am in the wrong business. :?

E-bay is getting to be like going to a gun auction.  There is always someone willing to pay more than it's worth just to get it.

That's the beauty of auctions and bidding (if you are the seller). People bid and then when others bid they have to keep bidding. Many times it becomes a competition or a chest pounding thing. They just can't let it be known that they were outbid and lost.

I don't know anything about the Topper.  Is it considered a high pressure receiver?  Like if you found one in 30-30 could you then fit a,  say a new 243 barrel on it?  I mean would it be safe, I assume it would probably fit.  Probably with some shiming.

The original Toppers are definitely NOT high pressure. And the factory won't even consider them for the barrel exchange program.

I have had other original Toppers in the past and sometimes they will accept shotgun barrels, sometimes they won't. I don't know if they will accept other early rifle barrels. In any case, it seems that what will fit or not is a very individual frame issue... ya won't know until ya try it.

My first was a 30/30 20 ga combo and it would not accept any other barrels at all. I didn't have the luxury of this forum 20 yrs ago when I owned it, so there may have been things I could have done to make other barrels work, but if there were I didn't know them.

I did an experiment recently where I tried exchanging original Topper 30/30 barrel onto my NEF 30/30 frame and my Ultra frame and modern barrels onto the older frame.

I posted it in the Classifieds in response to similar questions about barrel fittings. You can read it if you like: http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=45591&highlight=
