Muskrat in 330
« on: December 22, 2004, 10:32:57 AM »
today i went to check the beaver traps and what do you know, a muskrat caught by the hips in one of my 330's. I was having problems with them tripping the traps no matter how i angled the trigger or the tension on it, but never have i caught one this way... and he was a tiny one too! I guess its time to throw in a few 110s to keep them outta the big traps

If you are in a "no otter zone" cut your triggers back w/ a pair of dikes to bout two inches.............your problem will be eliminated as well as some of your small beaver.

BPM,it has been an easy year for otter here.Hot otter spots are dam crossovers and narrowed down spots in your waterways.I always set with my 330 triggers on the bottom.I also catch s few each year in my castor mound sets.
As far as rats in 330s go,got 3 in them this fall. The oddest one was the last one caught right by the neck.

well i've never trapped for rats and tonight i learned that it definetly WONT be something for me. I'm horrible at skinning just about anything but this guy- oh god. it ended up with no face, and about 30 holes in him from fleshing him- or trying to. I dont have a real fleshing knife and i can not believe i did such a horrible job. he ended up getting me so mad i threw it at the floor and when i picked it up it was in 2 pieces. so now i have two new patches of muskrat fur for fly tying... but that's all its good for. also, i only got one hind leg succesfully skinned. the beavers i got this year took me about 2 hours a piece to do but i only got 2 holes in them- really little ones- and that was from fleshing without a fleshing knife. kinda went overboard with throwing him at the floor but man that got me mad that i couldnt do him right :x .really gets me frustrated that i can't skin such a simple animal.... any suggestions? my dad used to trap em and showed me how to skin one last year but i havent gotten one since and he has no time to show me again, hes not home much.

I really think one of the best investments a beginning trapper can make is to buy a fur handling book or video.  Really speeds up the learning process being able to see it done over and over again.  Matt  Jones' AFTER THE CATCH video has segments on skinning and putting up all furbearers.  Great, great video.

Cruiser-
got a PM from ya back at the beginning of the month inviting me to the maine trapping forum, i joined up, the only problem is the computer has a virus and lets me read but not post :x . I'm working on getting it fixed, should be up and running normally by 15th of january at the lastest... anyway, is that the PM you meant? Bogmaster- thanks for the offer of help, but i ended up getting a rat in the sets i put out yesterday. My dad's home all week and he helped me out with it alot, made it so much easier than the last one. Just having someone there to help ya along makes it easier. My problem wasn't really the skinning i found out, i got this rat almost perfectly scun- but the fleshing was my error. I was trying to get every bit of flesh and fat off, cleaning it too much... which doesn't work when you're trying to flesh a thin skinned animal with an old butcher knife. Thanks for all the info guys, I'm still looking into that video for putting up fur. Bogmaster, got a website or something i can order the video from?

thanks again

the key to skinnning muskrats is...

Just start their legs like normal then sit them up and shove their head through their butt.  Well thats what it looks like your doing when you skin them this way anyways.
