Don't use my .270 too often but I like the Hornady 140 grain BTSP Interlock bullets for .270 in that Remington 700 ADL.

Have only used it once, that was for mule deer, and that heavy buck was a flop over dead shot with no tracking.  Around 120 yards, passed through the chest cavity.

I use the 150 grain Rem. corelokts and have always had exits. I have taken at least a dozen deer with this combo. and all deer fell on the spot. Maybe I'm just lucky or maybe your shooting tuffer deer don't know. Hornady has some good loads for the .270. Maybe try the Hornady 130 grain interbond light mag or the 140 grain boat tail light mag. Good luck to you and happy holidays.

Just click on ammunition and then drop down to .270

I would stay away from them if exits are what your looking for. I have never used them but have seen many deer hit with them that had no exits. They open up very fast. A good strong bullet like a barnes X or tsx or Nosler partition or accubond Hornady interbond should all give awesome penetration.

I busted a doe at about 150 yards give or take a few with Winchester Ballistics Silver tips. I got a pass through with a good sized exit hole. Usually I use remington 130 grain core-lokt in my .270 works everytime. The doe dropped right in here tracks. The ballistics tips did leave more of a mess than the core-lokts did, but they did what they were disigned to do. I will stay with the core-lokts or other solid bullets. Its like marylandeer said ''they open up fast'' and they make more of a mess.
Y'all take care and god bless.

My brother has 2 .270s...one for him...one for his son...He uses the Federal Premium 130gr BTSP...I think they are Sierra GameKings...
They have killed about 100 deer between them with this load....They leave a 2-3 inch exit hole...Work well...

My buddy has a custom Winchester Mod 70 that simply loves 130gr Winchester Silver Tips (and no they are not the "ballisitc" silvertips.)  Its all he has ever hunted with in that gun.  His son killed a deer at 127 yards a few years ago using this gun/bullet combo.

well all i use is 150 grain ballistic tips.  always get an exit hole.  and horrific wound channel, too.  i have never had a deer so much as twitch after a solid hit with them.  BUT you can forget about eating the area around the bullet hole.   if you looking for achoring the animal where it is, ballistic tips are your answer.  partitions are not needed for whitetails.

There is no better than the Nosler 150 PT and the Federal Premium ammo loaded with it has always shot sub MOA in all of our .270s. You'll have a blood trail using it. Assuming they don't fall to the shot that is.

I would stay away from the BT myself.  Had really bad luck with them.  I agree with GB on the PT bullets.

I've tried the Accubonds this year in my 7mm and have been impressed.  They are a compromise between the BT and the PTs for me.

For the 270 as with all cartridges, the best bullet is the one that is placed through a vital area of a deer.  I personally don't think there is a serious whit of difference between  any of the big game bullets.  I wouldn't shoot a varmit type but full speed ahead with all the rest and save your money on those fancy smancy slugs.   Yours shoots 1 inch groups and mine only shoots 2 inch but our deer  will be equally dead.

 I've never failed to get a complete pass thru with 130gr. BTs.
But I dont like shoulder shots, I think a heart or double lung shot is better . The BTs do massive internal damage and they go down fast, usually straight down. But you shoot what you like and have confidence in, bullet placement is what it's all about. My 2 cents.  :money:

I find it odd that the 150 grain RNCL doesn't provide consistant exits. I use the 150 grain Hornady interlocks and seldom recover a bullet. I also consider howquyicklyI recover a deer more impotant than an exit hole.

I use the Remington express corelokts 130 grain load in my 270 ONLY 1 deer had an exit hole of my 3 this season!  It was a 4 point 150 pound buck that I shot broadside through the lungs (he ran 3 feet from where I shot him)  there was a 2 inch exit hole when I retrieved him.   There was no way the other 2 deer would have had exit hole one was facing me (a doe 110 pounds I believe) with her neck down eating I shot her in the spine (1 inch in front of where the backstrap terminates near the shoulder) the bullet would have to had travel all the way through the chest cavity and exited out of the bottom of the stomach.   That doe I shot in the spine crumpled the shot was about 60 yards.   The next doe was quartering towards me and I shot her (entrance on front right shoulder) I broke her shoulder she staggered then fell and expired in 45 seconds (I felt it would be wasteful to shoot her again unless she started to get up).  That second doe was a 50'ish yard shot.

My Ruger M77 SS laminate will honestly put 3 shots into one ragged hole at 100 yards with 150 grain Hornady InterLocks. I believe the load is a stiff load of IMR 4895 with a Rem #9 primer behind it. Can't think of the grains right now and I don't feel like digging it up. The gun groups this load incredibly.

Deer hit with this load will drop either on the spot or within a few yards.

Question for GRAYBEARD!?
« Reply #20 on: January 06, 2005, 03:55:58 AM »
on an earlier post I saw that you like the "Hornady Classic in the .270"

Is that the: 140 grain SST

                or

140 grain Boat Tail Spire Point?

this is for Whitetails in Mississippi.

[:D I like 150 gr federal classics they are cheap, easy to find and always leave an exit wound. Most of the http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=time&v=55">time my exit wounds are http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=golf&v=55">golf ball sized. I have only recoverd one bullet that was a spine shot that also passed through a shoulder. I have never had a deer make it more then 40 yards.

If you are no worried about the damage done use winchesters loaded with ballistic silvertips. I shot a doe in the back with them using a 280 which is similar to the 270. Both enter and exit holes were around 1/2 inch! I had to shoot her in the head at about 2 feet away and there wasn't much of her head left

I have up until this year used the 130 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertips.  I have killed deer at 400 yards using this setup.  It shoots well under 1" with nothing other than a trigger job, and these rounds out of a 700 adl synthetic with a Leupold Rifleman 3x9 scope.  This last year, I went out and tried the Accubond Federal Premium load in 140 grain.  It shoots the same groups, and seemed to be more than likely to provide exit wounds.  I killed 2 deer with it this year.

I have killed deer with 4 different .270 bullets, and not a single one of them have run more than 15 yards......put them where they belong and you will not have to worry about blood trails and exit wounds.

I used to use the Sierra 130 grain prohunter for eastern hunting im my 270. It shot shot great groups and no Ny whitetail went to far. Nosler partitions in 130 grain are an ideal bullet for the 270. They open up on smaller deer and give plenty of penatration for quartering shots.  I imagine the new barnes 3xs are going to be great in this weight too. My cousin swears by 150 grain scirracos in his 06.

To answer the original question:

Use Federal 130-gr. Partitions or Winchester Supreme 140-gr. AccuBonds.  Both outstanding bullets are made by Nosler.
45 ACP 230-gr. Double Tap Gold Dot = 1,010 fps / 15.3" & .95"    :D

Aim for the Triangle Area between armpits & throat.

I used to shoot the nosler partition 150 grn.  I had great results but they are just to expensive. Switched to the hornady 140 grn. the deer don't know the difference. however the nosler seemed to have a better "shock value" but both are fine bullets. good luck TVC15

By using the Nosler 130 gr BT behind the shoulder, your deer will most likely drop in its tracks.
I have used the 140 gr BT in my 280 Rem with excellent results on WT Deer and Caribou. Broadside shots always exit with no wasted meat.
