I'm going off on a tangent here but, hold on were making a turn

I see no use whatsoever in those butt stock ammo holders   They unbalance the gun, they become snags waiting to happen in the woods but mainly they are not at all conveniant for reloading.  With the ammo on the outside (outboard) side of the stock, you will have to reach across your right arm or over the top of the buttstock to get to your ammo or you will have to give up your trigger hand grip on the rifle and use that hand to pull the next round to reload.  IMO, a better location for access to reload is on the back side of the trigger hand or on up the arm a bit beyond the trigger hand wrist.  You don't have to give up your grip, the next round is closer to the chamber and easier to reach with the other hand.  You only need two or three rounds there at most.  The rest of your spare ammo can be carried almost anywhere on your person out of the way but still there when needed.

Well, to get back to basics, I've hunted muzzleloader for many years and the need for a quick follow up shot isn't necessary if the first shot is true which, if you are an ethical hunter, will be. To reload efficiently, the reload must be convenient. To me, the butt stock is just one of many places that can be just that, just depends on your preference. I personally would not like ammo on the back of my hand, a belt or butt stock carrier would be preferable to that choice, for me...or in a pocket on my wrap around fanny pack as that is where I carry my quick loads  for the muzzleloader. If one needs quick follow up shots for dangerous game, I would suggest a repeating arm in lieu of a single shot.....or have your gun bearer hand you another weapon... :roll:

I like your gun bearer ideal... know where I can get one? Personally thou I have a cartridge belt that holds 20 rounds, black nylon. and a cartridge wallet that can be worn on your wrist, belt or sling it holds ten rounds. got'em both at wallymart.

Hey, I'm an ethical hunter! :grin:   Now let me tell you the story of the perfectly ethical shot I took at a doe antelope and put the bullet straight through her hindquarters!! :eek:   Had a bolt gun and resolved the problem almost immediately.

OTOH, what about the guy who has multiple deer tags and two deer step out?  He drops one and if he is quick (no pun intended :-) ) he can drop the other one too.  Then there is the non big game scenario such as coyotes where some callers (not me) seem to be able to bring in two and three at a time and by shooting quickly and carefully they drop more than one.

Agreed, and I still contend that on the side of the buttstock is not all that conveniant.  My back of the hand idea is probably not the best but I'd use it before a buttstock style or something on the front of the shirt on the shooting side or the belt carrier you mentioned.  All would be better than on the buttstock IMO.

Those scenarios where a second shot is possible or highly probable would be conducive to having a repeater, for sure. Or, just having a second round real handy, like clenched in your teeth! :roll:

A cartridge holder with three or four rounds pinned to my left breast pocket or strapped to the inside of my left arm above the wrist are most convenient in my opinion.  I break the gun open,  hold the gun by the forearm in my left hand and reload with my right hand pushing the round into the chamber with my thumb while re-establishing my grip and snapping the action closed in a flued motion like you see trap or skeet shooters do.  If I were to use a buttstock cartridge holder I would position it on the right or outside of the stock.
