Distribution: The Eastern Cape Province and KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, and Swaziland into Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe also the whole of central Africa.
Description/Characteristics: This is the smallest of all southern African antelope. Females are generally larger than males in this duiker species. Its greyish-brown coat has a blue sheen on the back, hence the name. The throat, belly and chest are much paler, almost white, and both male and female have small horns.
Diet: This little antelope is a browser, feeding on leaves, small branches and wild fruit dropped by monkeys. It is a frequent drinker.
Habits: This is a nocturnal antelope, inhabiting very thick bush and forested areas. It lies up in dense vegetation during the day, grazing in the open areas, but always close to thickets into which it can disappear.
The Blue Duiker marks its territory with secretions from the facial glands, and is an incredibly timid animal. Solitary, it is very alert, and will always hesitate before entering clearings to ensure that there is no danger before proceeding. It is preyed upon by Crowned Eagles and Pythons, and is, unfortunately, heavily poached.
