Bill, your the blue duiker king of photos!

What is it you would like to know? They are the smallest antelope in Africa and very hard to hunt. Mostly noctournal and in the thickest bush found in their habitat. Shotguns are the norm and trophy judging is difficult at best with them flashing through the bush like rabbits.

I have seen very few in the 13 years I have been a PH there. Red Duiker are a bit more common and I have seen quite  alot of them. They are slightly bigger too.

Not the smallest of the Africian Antelope. The Bates is next smallest with the Royal being the smallest. These are found in I think west central and central Africa. The Blue is the smallest in southern Africa with the Grysbok being the next larger or the Damara Dik-Dik could fit in there somewhere. I know my Dik-Dik is a bit smaller than my Cape Grysbok.

Recommended calibre: Light .22, shotgun or big bore rifle
Recommended bullet: Soft nosed or solid in big bore
Distribution: The Eastern Cape Province and KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, and Swaziland into Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe also the whole of central Africa.
Description/Characteristics: This is the smallest of all southern African antelope. Females are generally larger than males in this duiker species. Its greyish-brown coat has a blue sheen on the back, hence the name. The throat, belly and chest are much paler, almost white, and both male and female have small horns.
Diet: This little antelope is a browser, feeding on leaves, small branches and wild fruit dropped by monkeys. It is a frequent drinker.
Habits: This is a nocturnal antelope, inhabiting very thick bush and forested areas. It lies up in dense vegetation during the day, grazing in the open areas, but always close to thickets into which it can disappear.

The Blue Duiker marks its territory with secretions from the facial glands, and is an incredibly timid animal. Solitary, it is very alert, and will always hesitate before entering clearings to ensure that there is no danger before proceeding. It is preyed upon by Crowned Eagles and Pythons, and is, unfortunately, heavily poached.
Status: Classified as vulnerable
