long range events
« on: December 23, 2004, 11:45:06 AM »
I am not a SASS member as of yet.  I have been getting my kids through college before I start another hobby that costs.  However I aquired a nice 45-70 marlin cowboy that I would like to shoot in long range events if the rules allow a guy to only compete in one activity.
If I can, do the rounds have to be black powder only?

Not having observed such an event, at what distances are they conducted?
What sights are recommended by most competitors?
Thanks for the advise, Gary

- No, the rounds do not have to be in Black Powder.

- The distances can be from 100 to 1,000 yards (increments thereof).

- Sights are what you feel comfortable with.  Have seen Buckhorns to Peep Sights.......

- Your bullet weights and powder charges are probably the most crucial aspect.  Have seen alot of experimenting and shooters get comfortable with a certain weight and charge eventually.

- This is one thing that will teach you alot of humility to start.  It takes time and practice to become proficient at long-range shooting.
