Almost done sanding, got to cut the butt off and fit the recoil pad, then fit the forend and install the metal spacer, then I can start rubbing on the oil. I'll be sure to post a pic when I'm done.

Are those new stocks from Gunstocks, Inc.? They are our newest advertiser. Made the deal today and will be having a banner in the rotation. Likely will be up early next year. Maybe sooner.

Finished mine last week.  Probably won't be able to post a pic until I get new software or a new computer.  My photo site where I keep my albums(photoworks.com) just upgraded their software and I can't even get to my old pics.  Sucks.  As I posted in another thread, I ordered the standard stock with schnabel forend in fiddleback maple; plus I ordered the steel spacer and triggerguard from NEF.  The stocks were modified by cutting off the pistol grip to make a straight grip, then the nose of the comb was moved back about 1/2" to give me a lever action length grip plus a LOT higer nose on the comb.  Came out nice.  Overall profile is kind of like a model 94, but I left just a slight amount of "sowbelly" in the bottom of stock to give it that old time singleshot look. Ed had aleady installed the Pachmyr recoil pad for me, which made life a lot easier.  The forend was a bit more trouble, since the barrel channel required a goodly amount of sanding to bed properly; plus the steel spacer also needed to be sanded down quite a bit to fit.  Instead of using just the abrupt bevel between the back of the foreend and the spacer like the factory does(did), I used my belt grinder to grind the flat ovals you see on the back of  some of the old stocks(sharps etc) and the Ruger #1's.  Easy to do with a belt grinder or a disc grinder.....just make sure the workrest and belt are really square first.  Also took a lot of the belly out of the forend, so the wood was level with the bottom of the spacer.  After finish sanding and whiskering and staining(used a mixture of Oxblood and Meduim brown leather dyes to give me a dark reddish brown colour), I applied two coats of Watco's Teak Oil, let that dry for 3 days and then applied several coats of MinWax, waiting a day between coats to let them dry hard.
Took it to the range last Friday, but since the main Range was closed for the holidays had to used the much smaller Auxlliary range which has only a few positions for 25/50/100 yds, and no sandbags etc available.  Lot of guys were there with their new Christmas muzzleloaders which Santa had brought a few days early. Second Muzzleloader opens tomorrow here.  I managed to get off three quick shots at 50 yds just resting my elbows on the bench(it was also 14 degrees F with about a 20 knot wind blowing).  All three printed exactly where the rifle had shot with the old stock, and all three were in a tight cloverleaf touching.  Impressed the heck out of them guys with both the rifle's looks and the accuracy.  I am a happy rabbit hound.  DId take some pics and maybe I"ll figure out a way to get them here; but it won't happen soon.

Joel, How much did the metal forearm spacer & trigger guard run you from H&R?  I assume they are blued, do they offer these parts in a nickle finish? Hope you are able to post a few pic's soon so we can all get a look at her, sounds like she is a real beauty.

Sounds great Joel!! I really want to see those pictures. I brought up that stock company to the guys on this site and have yet to get the forearm I want to go with my Fajen Black Walnut buttstock  :(  . I feel badly I have not patronized them yet, they were so good about the whole thing,  but perhaps soon....<><....

Laminate stocks
« Reply #8 on: December 26, 2004, 11:10:27 AM »
I've seen the offerings from Gunstocks Inc., very nice. My question is how does one finish a laminate stock? Just sand and shape like wood or is there a special technique? (I would spend the money and let them install a recoil pad for me.) Do I need to re-seal the stock post sanding? Do I need special stuff? I suppose I could e-mail them and ask but they are
busy making stocks and I'm about 3 months from ordering.

Thanks for any input.

The spacer and trigger guard cost me $69.00 plus some postage for a total of around $72.00 I think.  They come "blued"; actually black.  Not really sure they're worth that much, but since I was going whole hog, I went the whole hog route.

Joel if you can get those pics into your hard drive there are several sites and a several guys here that can post them for you. Hunt101 is a good site and our friend here, Quickdtoo is a pretty good about posting pics that guys are having trouble getting up. I know we'd all like to see them for sure. The fiddleback maple certainly sounds interesting.

I'll see what I can do.  I can get the pics sent to me on CD; maybe that might work.  RIght now I"ve my money tied up in Knife stuff and don't really want to spend much on this computer, since I really don't use it for much except e-mail/Netscape.  Irritates me the way they keep "upgrading" you out of existance, when durned if I can see much difference what couple of upgrades I've done.  While here, there is something else I did on that rifle that I've done on all my rifles with recoil pads.  I round the top of the recoil pad down a bit to keep it from snagging on my clothes.  I just take some 80# and a flat piece of wood and use that to take the sharp edge off the top;  creating just a gentle rounddown. Then some 150, and then 400 grit to polish it to match the rest of the pad.    Recoil pads always had the irritating habit of catching on my clothes when I was bringing the rifle up, and learned this trick from a friend who shoots sporting clays.  Works great; the rifle just slides up without catching.
