If you could have only one handgun what would it be?
« on: January 31, 2003, 06:14:05 PM »
A discussion starter:

I'll realize that we absolutely need all the handguns we have  :).   (Who was that guy in the Police Academy movies who looked over his multitude of weapons and said, "But I need all of these!) But if you had to choose just one handgun, what would it be?

I would just hate to be without my Super 14 Contender chambered for the 7-30 Waters, so I guess I would have to choose it.  My poor '06 rifle has been lonely since I got it.  I find the Contender to be great for deer and groundhogs which are about the only things I have time to hunt.  I'd address the home defense issue with a shotgun.

Okay, folks, your turn!

Blessings!

I was gonna say my 375JDJ, but I think I would actually opt for my Encore in 308 or 30'06--ammo, brass and bullets galore, not to mention tons of surplus ammo available (both of barrels shoot  it very well) and they'll put a deathly sickness on anything that needs to dealt with.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

A semi auto handgun 1911 in .45 ACP in all cases.  But It will be hard to live without my FA .454 Casull.  I vote for both handguns.

DEFINATELY one of my Ruger Flattop .44's, but can't make up my mind between the 4 5/8" or the 7 1/2".  I spend my time in the deep woods quite a lot per year and need something accurate and powerful.  Normally don't see many grizz, though there are a few around here, and yet need to feed myself with small critters, ie grouse and bunnies occasionally!   And both of these particular pistols are VERY accurate.

If they chambered a Blackhawk for 356 Winchester, it would be the perfect gun.

Since the rules didn't say you can't do this, I'd say I'll take a Contender with any and every shootable barrel I can find, from .17 Jet to .45-70 Gov't.

If the rules require only one barrel, I'll take a .45 cal. convertible Blackhawk w/ 5.5" barrel.

If the rules only require one cartridge to be fired from the gun, then I'm not playing.

(1) ShootnStr8 - you are one terrible fella to make such limitations but since you are normally a great guy and weren't all that specific and since I sorta, kinda like being a bb on horrible, awrful questions like this I would hafta say......

(2) If I could have only ONE gun, it would be one 45 for my right hand, one for the other hand, one for my right hip pocket, one for my left hip pocket, one for my right hip and one for my left hip.  How am I doin' so far??

(3) Tain't no sech rool as 'Only Won Gun'.  Mikey.

Mikey,

If you aren't a lawyer, you should be!   :)   Since you have argued the meaning of "one" do you now want to discuss what the meaning of "is" is?

Well, at least you like the good ole .45! :-)   Since you want to hide them all over your body, you may want to visit www. amderringer.com and look at the little 5 round 45 they have.  Sure looks fun to shoot!

Blessings!

ShootnStr8:  No Sir, I'm not a lawyer.  I am a Republican and have no intention of 'klintonizing' myself by arguing (or trying to) the meaning of the word 'is'.

I was trying to think of something snappy to come back with but ya got me on the word 'is'.  I know what it is.  It is!  That's it.   On one hand I have to agree with southern utah - that's an awrful question to ask a shooter but on the other hand I have to think so darned seriously about it that it is a difficult question to answer.  I think if I had thought of it in terms of 'if your house was on fire and you only had one opportunity to grab your valuables (like wife, dogs, bank books, etc.,), which gun would you take with you'.  That would have to be the 45.

I like the idea of a little five shot derringer.  I'll have to visit that site.  Thanks.  This be Mikey.

Mickey,

I fear that my attempt to say something snappy after your snappy response may have offended you.  I apologize.  I certainly didn't mean to.  Indeed, you would be one of the last people I would want to offend. You're a great guy!  I should have put a  :)  after the word "is" in my post.

I do love your response, "I'm not a lawyer.  I'm a Republican..."  First it is funny.  And, second, it got me thinking that it would be interesting to know how many NRA and GOA members are Democrats.

Yea, that little 5 shot 45 derringer looks mighty appealing.  I wonder how reliable they are?

Blessings!

Ok, I snuck over from the black powder section, and instead of saying one of my '58 Remingtons, in the year 2003, I'd have to go with my S&W Model 29 w/8 3/8" barrel and my own handloads, it's accurate, can be loaded from mouse to moose, and it was good enough for dirty Harry It's good enough for me. RR :D

Gentlemen.
I've shot all types of competition hand gun and hunted for over 35 years. The only hand gun I'd have if it was the only one is the S&W 686 with a 6" barrel, 357 Mag. Light target loads to heavy mag. loads for small to medium game. It's readly available, ammo plentifull, action is good to excellent out of the box, won't rust, Holsters, speed loaders, easy to handle with heavy loads. Somebody stop me.
Probly the most versitile hand gun ever made.

445 Supermag,

Congrats on your '58!  How does it do in the accuracy department?  How much recoil?

Thanks!

I agree with Bama Boy !  Just one probably my RugerSBH 5.5 in bbl 44mag, but then maybe my Springfield 1911 or my S&W pre Md. 27 357.  Too many choices still have another half dozen or so 1st choices.

I made that choice - as I have just one handgun, a Ruger P90DC.  I'm big enough to carry it, and it's big enough to carry me.
I aim to please - but often miss.

i'm sorry gentlemen-my mind is in a total state of lockup--i can't make/won't/unable/without the will to make this decision so i'm gonna defer it to the congress for my decision--that oughta give me a number of years to procrastinate--maybe more years than i have left(hopefully).

S & W 686 w/ 6" bbl. would be my choice where I live in New Mexico. However, if I lived WAY up North I would opt. for my Redhawk 44 mag.
