I'd like to comment on DEB's post.
Unfortunately DEB is correct in many things. Politics are influencing wildlife management all too much. A Maine guide/game warden friend told me that wildlife is being managed more socially than scientifically.
In the past, managers had more autonomy to make decisions and enact policy. Today, people with about as much clue as the man in the moon have an impact. Referendums such as the one defeated in Maine as well as the Massachusetts referendum passed a few years ago outlawing use of bear dogs( now we are having bear problems, who would have guessed) and the use of leg hold and conibear traps( now we have a beaver and predator problem, once solved at no cost, but now ADC trappers charging hundreds to deal with issues) provide testimony as to the scope of the problem.
I have heard that the insurance industry had been screaming to PA concerning their deer /auto collisions issue. From what I understand, many management decisions were based on reducing this expensive issue( I have contended that people who moved out into the country didn't need to drive as if it were the Grand Prix in their sports car and slow down for wildlife) I know as a kid, I hunted there and took my first deer. A nice 3 pointer with a bow. I loved the hunting culture that seemed to be very evident in Potter County. If I had the time, I'd like to go back.
But with the current deer situation, I don't know.
