Does anybody know how to determine the loads for hangun cartridges to get the slow velocities needed for firelapping?

Try David Tubbs website.   They post loads for his Final Finish lapping system there and hopefully you can apply those numbers for yourself.

Depends on case size. In a 454 size case I use around 1.5-2 grains of 700X. Havent dropped much below 1.5 in most of them. You should be able to see the bullet flying out the bbl against the sky. It also helps to hold it upward to keep the powder against the primer. Make sure you have a wooden dowel or a fiberglass rod and hammer to get them unstuck when you stick one.
